I am a happy camper when it comes to Civ3, and a large part of my decision to get into Civ in the first place was back in 1999 when I got Civ2 for the Sony Playstation. I was a complete noob when it came to Civilization when I first got Civ2, but my enjoyment playing that game was a huge reason why I got so excited about the release of Civ3 on the PC. My question is this; what differences were there between Civ2 on the PC and on the Playstation? From the screenshots that i have seen both here and at Apolyton of Civ2, the graphics were quite a striking difference on the PC than from my Playstation version........were there any other differences? I want to know because I feel like I have missed something by never playing Civ2 on the PC.........many thanks in advance for any help. ;)

Well, one obvious difference was that you could modify the PC version of CivII, in some cases, quite extensively. Most of the principal differences, however, were marginally technical.

Also, if you recall, there was no cheat mode in the PS version of CivII. If you wanted any semblance of a cheat mode in that version, you had to own a gameshark peripheral and enter all those long-a$$ codes just to get infinite gold. Even then, the gameshark cheats weren't nearly as extensive as those available in the build-in cheat mode in the PC version.

In addition, like most PC games (eventually), CivII was patched in order to eliminate all of the out-of-the-factory bugs that the original program contained. Of course, doing that is well nigh impossible with a buggy console title. As you may recall, the PS version contained several annoying bugs that could never be patched, such as:

a.) The game's music would often freeze, producing an ear drum-piercing whistling sound.

b.) The game itself would often freeze up leaving no other choice by to hit the power button; meaning that if you hadn't saved your game in awhile, you'd have to restart from your last save, which could be a matter of centuries.

Overall, however, the PS version of CivII was actually a decent port-over, and adequately captured the original spirit of the game.

Good thread topic!

damn, I'd forgotten about that ear-piercing screeching when the music paused........-L-

I wonder why the moderator moved this thread?

C'mon, you started this thread. Isn't it obvious why it was moved?

Your topic is about CivII, not CivIII.
