Civ2 xp vs vista

Hey guys like most suffered trying to play civ2 on new operating systems, so was stuck play original col and civ on dos box, I bought a laptop with xp on it civ wouldn't run finally got it to run but crashes within seconds, my mate gave me his old gaming pc with vista on it and civ2 worked perfectly played for years on it modded it to give the sioux their own island changed starting locations to give countries a chance created my own units pain in the ase to do and after years got blue screen my pc in the shop two months want them to fix it not wipe the drive and lose my work and afraid civ won't work my question how come it worked on vista not xp I have the original game from the special edition box plus tot disc but installed the original game.
