Recently my Civ3 editor stopped recognizing that my game was installed. Rather odd, considering that I have the Steam version and it plays perfectly fine, and the scenario creator itself used to run perfectly fine as well. Problem is, there's been such a lapse between the last time I edited a map and now that I can't point to a recent update or system alteration that would have done the trick. The game itself is still running, but I try to edit a scenario by double-clicking on it, I get the same error message. I've even made sure the editor inside the Conquests folder is the program being used to try and launch the map.

Has anyone encountered this issue before? If nothing else I'll uninstall and reinstall, I suppose..

I've attached an image with the error message.

System is a Windows 10 which is caught up on updates.

The screenshot says it can't find "Play the World" which I find odd. Did you move the civ3PTW folder?

But no, I haven't seen it. I have a relatively unplayed Steam C3C install on an up-to-date Win10, and the Conquests and PTW editors fired up instantly with no complaints.

After that message, it says that it can't find Conquests, and then goes on to give me failure messages for every single file (art and such) the editor would require.

Do you see the editor in Steamlibrary\steamapps\common\Sid...\Conquest ? Then do you see your maps in the Scenario folder?

Some time ago I had the same issue with Win10 and Civ 3 Complete. As I don´t have the Steam version of CivComplete I can say, that this is not a special problem of the Steam version. The most weired thing is, after clicking through all those error reports about missing PtW-files, the editor was working. I have three versions of Civ 3 Complete on my pc (the Chronicles version, a German version and the GoG version). After reinstalling the Chronicles version (what is my main Civ 3 Complete version) the editor worked properly again.

Yeah, on different versions of windows over the years I have had issues. All on the final version of conquest. So they all were resolved with reinstalls. I have not had any so far with the steam version.

After the last Win10 Update I had this problem again. A change in the compability mode of the editor to Windows XP (Service Pack 3) solved the problem.

I ran into this issue last night after a windows update. Running the editor as admin fixed it, still confused as to why a windows update broke it in the first place though.
