One thing I have noticed which may help others (or may not..)
If between switching on my PC and running Civ 3 if use windows media player (or DVD viewer) then civ 3 either will not run (black screen when intor movie starts) or locks up fairly quickly - so its either do not use these progs before running civ3 or reboot before using civ.
I use win ME (running on nvidia geforce card) using the latset civ3 patch (1.29) and with windows updated to include the latest version of media player.
So it would appear any video program run before civ3 on win ME and presumably win 98 could cause problems.
