CIV4 & Dialup

I have a ADSL connection 1500/256 and I host.

If I start a new game my friend, on dialup, can connect and we play for hours but when I load an autosave when he trys to connects it takes ages, 15 - 20 mins or locks up completely, occasionally it works and we can play.

Is this common with dial up connections or we just havin bad luck ?

I also noticed in the advanced settings > options > other > network there is broadband or Dial up selection would ths make any difference?

I imagine these are setup by default? Mine was already on Broadband and his was already on dial up.
