Personally as most would agree C3C is probably the best version of Civ yet. If a Civ4 was released it would need to truly revolutinise Civ. Civ3 was already critised by many as being a Civ2 clone.

I would like to see an Alpha Centauri sequel, though with a more inspiring name than Alpha Centauri 2 hopefully. Alpha Centauri though maybe not as balanced as Civ3 did have have factions with very strong personalities and is a more enjoyed game than Civ3 for some people. The creativity and brilliance of the tech tree was brilliant in Alpha Centauri. Is this possible? I realise there was some conflict between Firaxis and the Civ franchise around the time Alpha Centauri was released. Does Firaxis have the rights to produce an Alpha Centauri sequel? I think it would be fun to play an Alpha Centauri sequel before a Civ4, you can get a little Civ'd out

If Civ4 was made, I'd want to see wonder movies return though they should be forcibly turned off in multiplayer. Even just adding the Civ2 ones again would be cool.

If you look in the SMAC forum (under "All Other Games"), you'll find a couple threads on why it's highly unlikely that SMAC2 ever materializes. It's a shame, IMO, but nothing to do about it 'mafraid.

Civilization IV is inevitable - and indeed confirmed - so we'll have to be content with that.

Till CivV, that is! ;)

Actually I'd like to read those threads do you have a link to the site or are the forums on Civ fanatics. Sorry I didn't quite understand your previos explanation.

Ok thanks I found it

Perhaps they could call it Civ 4 - The Galaxy or civ 4 - The Solar System. I will leave you all to imagine what that would entail. ;)

Yes AC was the best civ game - very plastic and lots of fun creating new units. Still those settings wouldn't fit in civ. Imagine making different units out of iron and horses - don't think so.
A shame AC2 will not appear. They could indeed make it a bit different and under a new name.

Wouldn't it be cool if the SpaceShip you built in Civ4 actually opened up a new map of Alpha Centauri. With all the new techs and everything. That could be one LOOOONG game though.

Then you'd have to defend against the neigboring Civs and the Aliens at the same time. Whoa!

There could be whole other dimensions of Inter-Planetary trade, communications lag, etc.

Any thought on this folks?

Very cool idea, something I've been dreaming about ever since AC came out. But, it's almost certainly too complex to be practical.

THAT would have been very uneccecary. I do seldom play to the space rate - pretty boring I think. How long do you really want to keep a game on for? - a month?

I agree there could have been a couple future techs as a modifier.
But a game in a game (where you have to play for xxxxxx hours to get there in the first place) is a bit unrealistic.

But I do miss AC2

They did this with Civ2 Test of Time. There was an extended game option in which you had to manage your civ on Alpha Centauri as well as back on Earth. Meanwhile, an alien civ is far ahead in techs.

it would be amazing if we could have SMAC 2, but only if Brian Reynolds designed it.

So what is the MAin reason for not making SMAC2 (or just AC2 for that sake?)

Do anyone now where to get BOTH AC2 + Alien XCrossfire for Windows XP. I was lucky enough to get the standard set for XP though, but I liked the extra stuff in AC.

Two reasons really. First, the team that made it left Firaxis. Second, I'm not sure it sold enough for Electronic Arts to fund a sequel.

SMAC is a lot like the original Star Trek. Star Trek died after a few seasons; but there were hard core fans that refused to let it be buried. Eventually, the fans had their way and look what it spawned (Next Generation, Voyager, Enterprise, + movies). Perhaps Firaxis, Infogames, Atari, et. al. should consider this when contemplating a sequel (SMAC2).
