Civ4 sucks. And it's a pitty (pt3 - the end)

Dear moderator, sir: can I pretty please with sugar on top have a chance to post a reply? Every single time I post an opinion and I login the next day to read reactions, it’s closed. That, pretty much like this one game I won’t mention here, sucks. Some of us work for a living, cant peak every 5 minutes. Give me a chance, paaaaliiiiiise!

So, here’s this guy, he’s bummed out because he’s disappointed with the latest version of this game he really likes. He finds a forum to talk about it and posts a message. I’m going to make it a no-brainer so you kids can follow it:

- The game lost its depth

No reasons “why or why not”. Just that. So let’s look at the replies, shall we?

Can I get my 15 30 seconds and 2 breaths back from reading this?

That’s right. I presented NONE whatsoever. I was posting an opinion saying (hence the title) “Civ 4 sucks”. Period. No point. Three things a normal person could do about it: a) the man’s right, it does suck. Hey, everyone, it’s the Emperor’s new clothes!!! b) the man is wrong, I do enjoy the game, and c) hey, is a naked chick on that pop-up window! I’m outta here! On the other hand, the abnormal things a person could do: right below…

… I'd say this person hadn't played any of the civs, including Civ 4, and was simply trolling because it's been getting good reviews and he's a Age of Empires fan. But surely he'd have better things to do with this time than that.

Been playing since Civ1, ya little punk! Don’t really like AoE. It misses the depth of Civ. Older Civs, that is. Did I mention before it’s my opinion that the new Civ is resembling a whole lot like AoE? Because it lost it’s depth? Guess not, you can’t find any debate points. My bad.

I usually disregard rant threads from people whose first and only post is to shred the game without giving any specifics...so that's what I'm gonna do!

Guys, ripping on spelling of one word is not really elevating the level of this debate...my mom has a Master's Degree and she can't spell anything right.
If the whole post was incoherent, no capitals or punctuation, etc., I could see dicounting his opinion as invalid, but, I think some of you are letting your love of cIV color your replies.. Hey, meanmachine, how about some specifics instead of the hit-and-run you posted?

Witty, there isn't anything to debate in his original post (except possibly the comparison to AoE3, which, IMHO is WAY off). Hey, I love the game too, and I want to defend it, but this guy was pretty angry about something when he posted....it's all emotion. There's nothing to debate!

Different views, but we could sit on a table on some coffee shop talking about Civ4 like normal people should. Kids, don’t know the man, but learn from him… But the comparison with AoE? Not the first to make it…

So then, I posted a second thread, where – once again – I didn’t specify my complaints with Civ4, just my conclusion about it. I did however trashed on the flagship of Civ4, it’s graphics, cause the had little to the game play when it comes down to it. Most of it had a nice tone with some real discution going on:

Ok, I see maybe I should have gone into it. You and Condor have a point. But at the time, I was really just stressing my disappointing with the whole deal, saying: “come on, people, the game took a wrong turn!”

CIV IV is the best of the CIV games in my opinion. The variation and replayability have never been better. I dont care about 3D either, but I can see a very good game beyond it. Find something else to play although I cannot think of what to reccomend as CIV IV is the only good current TBS I can think of.

This post is even less productive than your first one a few days ago. The reason you got so many hostile responses (3 from me personally) was that you signed up to a website/forum called CivFANatics (and I emphasize FAN) and went on a tirade to rip the game with no coherent points or arguments. Now, you come on again and post a complete flame/troll thread again goating negative responses. I really hope this post let you blow off all that steam that was boiling inside you. However, the best part is mentioning that you probably wont be back on this forum (which I personally dont believe) which means we can all go back to having civlilized (no pun inteneded) discussion about our favorite game without having to worry about troll like you lurking about. EDIT: Calling us children (when the average age of this forum is somewhere between 25 and 30 if Im not mistaken) is not a very good debate tactic either

If you don't like the game, drop it in the trash and play something else. Why waste words on something you don't like?

Obviously the man liked the civ series a lot and he is very dissatisfied with civ4. When you buy a game for the first time and you don't like it you just throw it in the garbage and never think about it again. It happened to me not once. But when you love a game and the next version disappoints you, especially if you are a coleric person, you might behave just like this.

I think he is just as entitled to his opinion as those saying that "civ4 is awesome". I happen to not agree with him when he says that civ4 sucks but I agree when he says that civ4 lost some of its depth and fun. I too feel that the developers made a step (or more) in the RTS direction in order to get more customers (just look at the new interface). It is their right to do it, but it is also my right to be unhappy with this choice.

Oh well, what's the point, this thread will be closed anyway.

That game, and it's horrible support, more than any other, was responsible for my present tendancy to not purchase new games from certain companies.

All this is really quite interesting... This tread is just another example of intolerance to others opinions that exist today.

It is unfortunate that i had to read all the above to get a couple of "insights" into what Mean Machine (MM) is thinking. Instead of a blanket post such as "Civ Sucks", i would have preferred a little depth, but that was some. It seems the biggest disappointment for MM is that this game lacks the depth of the previous versions. I would agree to that. However, i do not feel that this alone is a reason for discrediting the game itself. That are many components that i find promising for the future, such as religion, culture and Great People, however, i do feel that many things have been left out.

My real feeling about the development of the game follows HUSZARS thought process. They made it main stream and may have alienated some of the "hard core" civ players that loved the never ending multitasking needed to compete in this game. I, for one, hold out hope that the expansion will dig deeper in the game for those that want the challenge.

And yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion... no matter what. Real adults listen, discuss, and then agree to disagree if no common ground can be found.

I have to agree with warpus on both points. There seem to be a lot of Civ IV Fanboys out there who are intolerant of another opinions. On the other hand Mean Machine didn't need to post this thread 3 times. If the first post had been more specific to his disappointment and didn't use derogatory like "Civ IV sucks". I agree that Civ IV doesn't have the depth and is as epic. I feel it is geared more for the quick game player (a quick game is fun at times but I also like to delve into the layers of my cities and civ). I also feel that Civ IV has eveolved in a good way with the addition of religion and the civics control menu amongst other things. I am looking forward to what the expansion pack will add. For poster (such as Darkness) you need to realize not everyone that posts on civfanatics is from the US or the UK. Some are writing their second langauge (English in case you aren't sure what I mean), which Mean Machine speciifcally responded to this issue in this post. I agree and disagree with you Mean machine.

Remember: It is only a flame war if you make it one. Hopefully everyone can act civilly and respectfully to each other ( I won't ask you all to act like adults since some aren't adults and some adults act like children).
