I've been reluctantly following the civ5 forum, finding myself spending more and more time there as the release date approaches. I don't have a computer that will run it - work PC is admin locked, and at home I've got an iMac, and nobody's talking about a mac release.

So are any of you guys going to get it?

I watched the ustream videos, and the game looks beautiful.

OK, well I just learned that my OS comes with Boot Camp, which allows me to install Windows... so I will definitely be getting civ5. I'll probably do it through steampowered.com, as I don't really need any of the physical things that come in the box. Now I just need to get a copy of windows.

Any opinions on which version of windows I should get, considering that I'll only be running Civ5 on it?

I'm not sure when I will get Civ 5. I haven't pre-ordered it because I don't know whether my computer will run it or not. I just bought this computer a year ago and I really don't want to buy another pc (or buy a video card for this one). Btw, I remeber having to upgrade my computer when Civ 2 came out.

As for Windows, I'd stay away from Vista. I've never used it but I've heard too many bad things about it. I always liked XP. My new pc has Windows 7 which I've not had much trouble with now that I know to install and run everything as 'administrator'.

EDIT: Though I do have a $40 rewards certificate from Best Buy. Might be worth using it on Civ 5, thoguh I'd be bummed if I got the game and then couldn't play it. Lack of civ tiime has also been an issue lately.

Here, here. me, me!! :bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce:

I've preordered and I am really looking forward to playing it!
I even bought a brand new laptop recently to meet the requirements.

My only concern is the Cive ;) community won't be such a nice little family as we are back here...

But I won't be waiting till Civ-6 release to escape mainstream this time :nono:

Perhaps we'll have to start up a multi-team CivE(epsilon??) game in a couple of months :mischief:

I'm still trying to figure out the best way to get it onto my iMac. I've found a not-quite-as-pricey edition of Windows7 that I might get... I've also come across the CodeWeavers package. I think I'll try CodeWeavers tonight, and download the demo. Worst case scenario, I'll buy a copy of Windows7.

Played the demo, runs and looks great but not convinced yet. Maybe after a price reduction.

I downloaded the demo last night. Didn't have time to try it last night. Tried to take a peek at it this morning. It went through the initialization process. WhenI click 'play' it asks which version of Direct X to use. No matter which one I choose nothing seems to happen. No time to research it this morning. Perhaps my on board video is not enough for Civ 5. :dunno:

Donsig, I had the same problem. But I found that after clicking the upper choice several (6? 8? 10??) times, eventually the screen would do something.

I was indeed able to play, but the graphics weren't working right at all.

But I'm on a mac, using CodeWeavers translational software. I might have to pony up and pay for Windows at some point.

Amazon told me, I'd be getting my copy tomorrow

Too bad I'll be having kids' weekend scheduled  and business meeting from sunday afternoon to Tuesday :wallbash: :gripe:

Still haven't gotten the demo to work. Did some reading in the forums and found that the location of the program can foul things up. Someone also said DirectX 11 is required even if you don't use it. Maybe I'll try peter's method. click click click click

Donsig, I've found that clicking once on DirectX 9 (and then waiting patiently!) is reliable for me. But then again, I'm on a Mac, so who knows :dunno:

@ Paul - Great to hear that you're picking up the game! But am I understanding correctly that you're going to be in a business meeting for 36 hours?? :faint:

Well not 36 hours straight, but I won't be able to play from sunday afternoon (preparing the meeting in a hotel) till Tuesday evening (back home).

Actually the business meetings are Monday and Tuesday with a business dinner on Monday.

No problem usually (actually quite entertaining  ), but a real pain with a fresh copy of Civ5 on the desk at home...

Patience didn't seem to work last night. I did read ainwood's article comparing dx10 and 11. It has a link to a systems requirement checker and my pc passed the minimum requirements. So I guess I gave to go back to the location of the installed program and the dx11 requirement. Didn't have time to research it last night since I played our turn then finished GOTM 106.

So, anyone care to report on their Civ 5 experiences to this point?

I uninstalled both the demo and steam, then re-installed them and still had the same problem. Used Google and found someone with the same problem who said it was his display. I followed his advice and at least got an error message when I tried to start the demo. This led me to download and re-install directX. After that it worked! So last night I had my first taste of Civ 5. I'm going to play with the demo a bit more before deciding how soon I'll buy the game.
