Just had a thought, but do you guys think the way the new Great Person system works will leave little to no room for Unique Great Person Units for a Civilization? It'd be weird to have a unique unit that can be stolen from you by another civ unless its a gameplay related mechanic (possible future ability of Kublai Khan maybe? *wink* firaxispls *wink*). That, and Great People are being given their own attributes now (or least for the most part) so they're sort of a mini unique unit available to everyone for a limited time.

It'd be a shame to see units like the Khan from Civ 5 hit the dust, but I don't see it jelling too well with the new system :(

They do seem to be precluding 'Unique Great Persons' with the current system, but that doesn't Preclude the Khan as a Unique. Increasing or changing the Factors/speed of a Great General could be the Unique Ability of the Mongol/Hun Civ Leader, or an ability linked to the Civ itself; All (insert Nomadic Civilization from Scythians to Mongols here) Great Generals have +2 or +3 movement and allow units within their Influence to pillage without penalty - for example.

And, in addition to having Great People 'stolen' from you, does anyone know if they can be Traded? That would follow the 17th century and later trend historically of Mercenary Generals, like de Saxe (Saxon fighting for France) or Lacey (Irish fighting for Austria) and the modern trend of Great Scientists and Great Merchants setting up shop wherever they like (see Einstein, for instance)

Like any new system, there are a lot of aspects of the new Great People system to be explored - and we don't really know for sure that Firaxis hasn't, or isn't, exploring them even as we type...

Or they could make the Unique attribute apply to All Great persons of the type. In keeping with the mongol example, and in fact if we want to just rip it off from civ5 entirely for this example - they could have an ability something to the affect of;

"All Great Generals you recruit are Khans, granting them the ability to heal adjacent units an additional X per turn"

That pretty much solves the problem; Give an additional bonus that applies to all GP's of the type that you're trying to make unique for the civ.

It's not like unique Great People have exactly been a staple of the franchise. I mean, Civ5 basically had Khans and Merchants of Venice, right? If they returned, they could just be UU now.

It wouldn't be difficult to just make one civ get a unique GP.

Everyone fights over a Great General, but if Mongol wins it becomes a Khan.

Hell it makes more sense as GP hae era based bonus. A Civ based on a specific GP could hae a GP with a feature that lasts the whole game.

Great General Cao Cao gives a bonus to Medieval and Renaissance units
Khan Cao Cao gives a bonus to Medieval and Renaissance units and a bonus to attacking on other continents.

Could also just be case of "Discover this Tech or Civic and receive a free Great General with the following bonuses... etc etc"

I think unique Great Generals and Great Admirals would still work fine, as they still function in roughly the same way as Civ V until they become obsolete (the naming would be weird, since they're drawn from a common pool, but that's a relatively minor issue). For other GP types, though, it's not clear what it would even mean to have unique variants, as each one is already unique.
