Civ7 is using Denuvo. This is a very hard pass for me. Don't care who you are, or what game you are, Denuvo is the line I will not cross.

Sorry Firaxis, you just lost a customer.

EDIT: Updating this post to note I confused anti tamper with anti cheat. Denuvo anti cheat use kernel level access, Denuvo anti tamper does not. Civ7 is listed with anti tamper at time of writing.

It might be helpful to expand the post with information about why that is a problem because not everyone knows all the DRM tools and their specific downsides.
Fair.

My issue with denuvo is you give them unrestricted kernel level access to your entire PC, and you give them permission to disable or uninstall any software it deems, not just the software you installed Denuvo with.

Other people have different issues with denuvo, but that's why I will never install anything that has it.

I'm very dubious, too, given I have unrelated, but, "unregistered," computer files. And, I don't all of what it will take liberties with - uninstalling previous iterations of Civ?

There needs to be strong pushback against this. Customer campaigns have convinced developers to abandon DRM like Denuvo before, and we should do the same for Civ VII. We know Firaxis reads these forums; let’s make this post so visible that they can’t help but notice.

I don’t care if this is coming from their corporate overlords. Firaxis needs to go to bat for its fans on this one.

Who are they? If 'they' refers to Firaxis, then there's no reason to believe they would want to harm our computers, right?

2K often removes Denuvo ~6 months after release, so if you refuse to install it, you may be able to out-wait it.
Still it‘s a shame. We, the players and customers, we don‘t want it, and they know exactly that we don‘t want it, but the companies keep trying to force us to accept it… i‘m not going to support that behaviour. Viva la Rev… ✊

Besides, it‘s really just a videogame… it‘s not worth it.

Yep, too much issues reported with that DRM, won't buy until it's removed.

Denuvo has been criticised for high CPU usage and excessive writing operations on storage components, the latter potentially causing significant life-span reductions for solid-state drives (SSDs). Denuvo Software Solutions has denied both claims.[28] In the case of Tekken 7 and Sonic Mania Plus, Denuvo caused a significant decrease in performance in several parts of these games.[29][30] Sam Machkovech of Ars Technica reviewed in-depth how Denuvo was causing performance penalties, releasing an article on the matter in December 2018.[31] In December 2018, Joel Hruska of ExtremeTech compared the performance of multiple games that use Denuvo and found that the games had significantly higher frame rates and lower loading times when the DRM system was disabled.[32]

In November 2021, several recent games using Denuvo were rendered unplayable, reportedly due to a Denuvo-owned domain name expiring.[35] In the same month, it was reported that Denuvo Anti-Tamper was incompatible with Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems running on CPUs in the Alder Lake series.[36] This was fixed by January 2022.

Welp guess who is sticking with Civ 6 and Civ 4 for the next few years.

That part is for the anti-cheat software, not the DRM, is it not ?
