Civics screen broken, text looks funky, multiplayers messed up

I installed Beyond the Sword on my brother's laptop but it's not working right. When I check for updates it says there are none and all the patches have been downloaded.

When you go into the civics screen and roll over the various civics, it doesn't explain what they do. You also cannot change civics. It's stuck on all the default ones. You can't even click "cancel" to leave the civics screen, you have to press ESC.

Also of note, some text looks wrong. For example, where it should say "CUSTOM SCENARIO," it says "TXT_KEY_MAIN_MENU_CUSTOM_SCENARIO." When I click "play now" to explore the game options, text is filled with underscores again. i.e. "TXT_KEY_MAP_SCRIPT_FRACTAL_DESCR."

Then, we've been trying to multiplay against each other using the "internet games." Even though it is the same exact version as mine, as indicated in the game build info screen, the multiplayer game screen tells us we are out of sync and some files don't match.

How do I fix this? What do you recommend? And secondarily, what if I copied all my program files in the Civilization 4 folder and dropped it into my brother's on his laptop? I have Warlords installed too, though and he does not.

I am playing bts and have the same problem on my laptop with vista.

I have no problem playing the game on my xp desktop though. Any suggestions?

I have the same problem as described in the OP. Reinstalling and other such things does not help. Problem persists no matter what.

Same scenario as above - laptop, Vista, TXT-lines of text, civics screen all messed up.

Any good ideas out there? I haven't found any help on the Internet - this thread was the closest thing I could find.

I found the solution. You must manually install the Civ IV 1.74 patch. Neither the Warlords or BTS disc apply this patch.

What I did was install Civ IV, then run the 1.74 patch, then install warlords, then install bts (then run bts 3.13 patch). I know this is the long way (because the bts disc will install warlords), but I was just being careful and it worked.
