I am playing Republic at King level. My citizens are dissatisfied all the time. I’ve got four military units in each city, a temple AND a coliseum and yet cities of just three and four people are dissatisfied. I can’t make more entertainers or they run out of food and can’t sustain their military units.

I have 30% taxes 60% science and 10% luxuries. If I up the luxuries any more, I'll never discover anything!

Can anyone help. Thanks in advance

With Republic, military units inside your cities don't help with happiness. But ones outside your cities hurt it [tho one outside unit per city is OK]. Try bringing your units back into cities, or into fortresses near your cities. IIRC airplanes cause even more unhappiness, though I rarely build them.

Vans do no harm, and trade should help you progress quickly in science, even with your science bar low. Trade should work even better in Republic than Monarchy because your cities get more arrows, hence bigger bonuses.
Use mainly triremes and transports (no effect on happiness IIRC) rather than caravels (which have an attack factor).

IMO Wonders are more efficient than temples and colosseums, but that doesn't seem to be your main problem.

Thanks. I don't wish to appear stupid (which I probably am) but I don't know what IIRC means. I am at the very early stages of the game - light years away from airplanes and caravans and I can't bring my military units back into the cities if I am attacking my next door neighbours.
I don't know what IMO means either, obviously I dont' do initials and abbreviations.

Triremes have an attack factor too, so they can affect unhappiness in Republic cities if there is already one military unit away from home. Republic and Democracy are not the best governments to use when you are in a long war campaign against neighbors. Drop back to Monarchy or go to Commy or Fundy (or build the Statue and sneak into them without having the tech). Don't be ashamed to up your Lux levels, expecially if you have built Markets in major cities - I often run with 20-30% Lux when I'm still working on longer-term solutions like Michelangelo's.

Another possibility is that you are playing a higher difficulty level than you are used to, where citizens start unhappy or become unhappy quicker than the lower difficulty levels. Getting Hanging Gardens early is a good start to calming people down, followed by Mikes. Add JSBach later, and the Cure if you are in the end game and have big cities.

IIRC=If I Recall Correctly; IMO= In My Opinion

Hi Everyone,

Not being a footie fan, I shall concentrate on Civ for the next three weeks.

I have dominated my research into weapons and have been able to take over several of my enemies large cities. However because I have developed weapons at the expense of other discoveries I can't build cathedrals and even though I put temples and colosseums into my new cities they are still unhappy even though I have increased luxuries. Because of the extra people I have had to turn into entertainers, my cities are now losing food and I just lurch from one crisis to another.

Is there anything I can do about it?

Many thanks

Don't forget that Marketplaces, Banks and Stock Exchanges all increase the luxuries you have going into a city. While Temples and usch help by making people content, Marketplaces and such (coupled with luxuries) can decrease the number of unhappy people as well as increase the number of happy people. As far as the city is concerned, for each happy person you have it offsets one unhappy person.

Not really. I took their advice and played for a while as Monarchy before going to republic and for a while it worked.

Trekkie - Happiness shouldn't be a major problem at King level unless you have a big civ (or you have units out of cities with Rep/Demo govts). Roughly how many cities do you have ? How big are they ?

Thanks for your offers of help. I have actually started a new game now and lost my saved game, but I'll bear it in mind for the future.
