Hey guys,

I'm taking a small break from all the Civ2 preservation work I'm doing to also do a bit of Civ1 work and preserve it's barely known scenario scene. The 30th anniversary celebrations are coming up so it seemed like a good time!

While doing this work I've noticed a couple of things in the old Civ1 area that could use a bit a spruce up. Especially if more people will be visiting the area over Sept and I'm also working on a video series that may attract some more attention to that area in the future too so it would be good if these could be done. However it's not the end of the world if no ones interested in the ideas but I figured there's no harm is asking!

1. Add a 'Civ1 - Scenarios' sub category to the Civ1 downloads area to match other Civ game download area folders. Scenarios for Civilization 1 are not commonly known but they did happen and I've started working collecting and uploading them. Since there's no dedicated scenario sub folder I've just been chucking them into the main Civ1 downloads root area since the only sub folder there is for utility programs. If you guys agree to make the folder then I should point out that I've already uploaded 6 scenarios that would need to be moved into it and I'm about to add a few more. :)

2. Rename the old 'Civ1 - Game of the Month' sub forum to either 'Civ1 - Scenario Creation & Game of the Month' or just 'Civ1 - Scenario Creation' (similar title to the scenario creation sub forums for later Civ games). The GOTM forum was created in 2006 as people were regularly still creating Civ1 maps and scenarios as a fun monthly thing and they were tired of their stuff getting mixed up in all the regular Civ1 chat. However as the years went by and the Civ1 community got quieter it stopped being monthly. And over its final years where scenarios were released every 3-6months occasional confused people would drop by asking what game of the month was and what was going on etc, and regular members would have to explain that it was actually more a scenario creation forum and that its name should be changed. Yet for whatever reason it would seem that none of them petitioned the idea to you guys. Now days it's pretty quiet there as the old GOTM regulars have moved on and no one else really know whats going on in there so they ignore it. Hopefully some of the work I'll be doing might breath some fresh life into the old Civ1 scenario scene so it would be good if there was a clearer and more relevant sub forum title for people looking to play or make scenarios and custom games.

Also if that goes ahead I'll probably make a Scenario Creation General information thread in there with links to relevant map editors and programs etc that I'll probably ask you guys to pin there for me too. That might also inspire more lurkers to get involved! :)

Regards

Blake

Regarding #1: How many scenarios do you think you can find? Right now it's 16 entries in the utility programs, and 16 in the main section. This might not be worth subcategorizing, unless you say there's like 20 more to come.

Regarding #2: I suppose we could do that, although this might not have a big impact.

1. Not sure yet. I've found around 10 so far but that was just on the GOTM forum. Still gotta search in some other old places to see if I can find more which I suspect I will. If my work sparks interest in new scenario making then that'll increase the number further.

2. Yeah I'm not exactly betting the house on it but just in case there is some renewed interest it would be good if it was better named. It's what some of the original members wanted anyway but didn't bother ask here for it for some reason.

eh, mmhh.... what should the section name be? Scenarios? Maps? Maps & Scenarios?

Hmm that's a good point. I've only found 10ish because I'm being picky and just rescuing what I consider to be scenarios for my preservation project. There are heaps of other save game entries in the Civ1 GOTM forum that I ignored because they didn't have a story or pre-built Civs making them purely a map in my book. So if people started adding those ones too then the total will easily go way past 20. So yeah a combined 'Civ1 - Maps & Scenarios' section would work too!

I'll try to be clear in my naming (eg always putting Scenario on the end of my titles), and maybe I'll go and process a map or 2 after all (and put Map on the end of their titles) so people can see the pattern to follow to ensure no confusion in a combined scenario and map area.

Oh wow! Thank you so much guys! Looks awesome! :)

Unfortunately even the creator of a download cannot seem to move their download to a different folder so I'm gonna need someones help moving the 6 existing scenarios I previously uploaded into the new folder please. Sorry about this, I wish I could do it myself without bothering you guys again but I don't see any options for it on my downloads.

Thank you so much! :)

Nah I can edit my resources just fine and change lots of things, I just can't move them between download folders sadly. That's what I was saying to you guys in the other thread (and posted a screenshot of my limited edit screen options on my own download) when Thunderfall asked and seemed surprised that regular members can't move their own stuff. If you're not a mod or an admin it would seem you can't move your own stuff around between the folders. So if I'm wrong then the link or button for that must be in the most amazing friggin location because I've looked so many times over the last couple of years haha!
