Civilization 4.exe won't run after install

I recently downloaded Civ 4 and the expansions off of direct2drive but after installing the base game, which seems to be successful the game will not start.

I receive the following error after clicking the .exe

"Sid Meier's Civilization 4 has stopped working

A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available"

Obviously no solution is ever found.


From eventvwr I have the following;

"Faulting application Civilization4.exe, version 1.7.4.0, time stamp 0x464bc30c, faulting module Civilization4.exe, version 1.7.4.0, time stamp 0x464bc30c, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x010a6c72, process id 0x23ec, application start time 0x01cc09cb326030c4."

I have 32 Bit Windows and enough memory and cpu to run this game.
