I was wondering what people thought of the themes, particularly those for the Civs, city-states, scenarios and wonders.

America: America the Beautiful composed by Michael Curran, orchestrated by Knorr
Patriotic song, lyrics written by Katharine Lee Bates and music by Samuel A. Ward. 1895. Peace theme does a great job of evoking freedom and such. War theme shows this song could actually work in this way.
Washington's Artillery March would prolly work if Georgie was on horseback on some battlefield.

Arabia: Thikriati; Hijaz Maqam composed by Geoff Knorr
There are two sources for this melody. They are Thikriati, a traditional Arabic melody and one of the traditional ancient calls to prayer melodies of the Hijaz Maqam. Hijaz Maqam refers to specific way a particular melodic mode should be played and improvised in Arabic traditional music. Knorr first heard Thikriati on an album called Musicians from Al Kamandjati Live
What’s funny is that part of the war theme reminded me of Aladdin. Could be intentional. I find the peace theme to be quite mellow at the beginning, then later epic. Both themes are good overall.
Saladin's theme is faster, but was prolly an original composition.

Aztec: Cora Mitote Song from Santa Teresa composed by Michael Curran
The Cora are an indigenous people in Mexico who speak a language related to Nahuatl. Mitote means song. Very peaceful sounding, but the war theme is pure terror like those Jaguar warriors are roaming the jungle for their prey!.
Tenochtitlan Revealed is original and not really like Mesoamerican music.

Austria: coming soon

Babylon: A Zaluzi to the Gods (Hurrian Hymn 6, or Hurrian Hymn to Nikkal copied by Ammurabi) composed by Roland Rizzo
Some of the oldest recorded music on tablets found in Ugarit. I read opinions which dislike their music. But, its based on a real melody. The war theme is catching to me.
Hammurabi's theme is more peaceful but not suited for Nebby. Hammy is waving his arms around and showing you his gardens. Nebby drops his cup and is in complete darkness save for the fires.

Byzantine coming soon

Carthage coming soon

Celts coming soon

China: Gao Shan Liu Shui composed by Michael Curran, orchestrated by Knorr
Means high mountains, flowing water. Quqin pieces associated with Bo Ya in the Warring States Period. Being of Chinese descent, it makes me feel proud of my homeland, despite disliking its current rulers.
Shining Path is amateur compared with this. So is Qin Shi Huang's theme.

Denmark: Drømte mig en drøm i nat composed by Michael Curran
Drømte mig en drøm i nat (“I dreamt me a dream”) is the oldest known Danish folk song and the piece is also inspired by Nobilis Humilis, written by Orkney monks, Curran found both melodies on a site called Viking Answer Lady. Some people also dislike this song, but I think it fits Viking era Denmark. Not sure where the lyrics in the war theme are from.
Ragnar's theme starts out weird, what with all the grunting. Did Norse actually do that in their music? Only late one is good.

Dutch/Netherlands coming soon

Egypt: Ancient Egyptian Melody Fragments composed by Michael Curran, orchestrated by Knorr
Sounds like Ancient Egypt. Not sure if based on real music from that time period. Curran got his melody from here "Music of the Ancient Sumerians, Egyptians & Greeks" by "The Ensemble De Organographia", particularly the track Harp Piece (A) and the 1st track Anon-Musical Excerpts . War theme is pretty epic, as it reminds me of a chariot charge with archers shooting arrows.
Harvest of the Nile is meh for me. Worked in earlier games.

England: I Vow to Thee, My Country composed by Geoff Knorr
Uses a British patriotic hymn with a melody by Gustav Holst. Poem was by Sir Cecil Spring-Rice. A very pleasant peace theme for this country. The war theme is epic with the marching music.
Fonfare Rondeau may fit Lizzie's times better, but I prefer Holst's music. It's very patriotic.

Ethiopia coming soon

France: Cancan composed by Michael Curran, orchestrated by Knorr
Music hall dance, possibly from Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld. Peace theme is nice sounding and war theme is intimidating. Lyrics are in a post below.
La Marseillaise rendition is horrible, particularly the first one

Germany: Ode to Joy composed by Michael Curran, orchestrated by Knorr
Famous song by Beethoven (in his 9thSymphony) with the lyrics by Friedrich Schiller. Pleasant sounding peace theme, but the war theme is quite scary with the organ and such.
Bismarck's old theme (also by Beethoven) is too slow and low for my tastes. Frederick's fares better.

Greece: Epitaph of Seikilos composed by Geoff Knorr
One of the oldest surviving music compositions today. Found on a tombstone in Modern Turkey. I like the peace theme a lot. War theme is quite good as well. Wish they included the singing though.
Alex's old theme is faux ancient Greek, was actually the Greco-Roman diplomacy theme in 3.

Hun coming soon

Inca: Traditional Inca Melody Fragments composed by Geoff Knorr
Certainly sounds like traditional Andean music. Not sure if it’s based on specific melodies. Knorr took the music from this CD http://sonicsafarimusic.com/music/incamusic/, particularly the track Wayno. A favorite of mines, the melody evoke the Andes. War theme is very tribal.
Huayna Capac's theme is also meh for me, maybe works for that guy in game.

India: Raga Asa composed by Michael Curran, orchestrated by Knorr
Indian musical raga (composition) appears in Sikh tradition from northern India, part of Sikh holy scripture. Peace theme sounds very westernized, but the war theme contains singing. Does anybody know where the lyrics are from or if they are in Hindi?
Gandhi's old theme sounds more authentic, but I have no idea where they got it from.

Iroquois: Ho, Ho, Watanay composed by Ian Smith
Iroquois lullaby, means “Sleep, sleep, little ones”. Peace theme is very soothing, while the war one is tribal and quite intimidating and haunting.

Japan: Rokudan no Shirabe composed by Geoff Knorr
Means Music of Six Steps. By Yatsuhashi Kengyo (1600’s). Peace theme fits it well with Oda’s background. War theme is very scary, as it reminds me of the Japanese atrocities in WW2. My family are from Malaysia and Singapore, both conquered by this nation. Several relatives were killed.
I like Tokugawa's Sakura Sakura, but only the late version.

Korea: Arirang, composed by Michael Curran
Korea folk song sometimes considered unofficial national anthem of Korea. Peace theme is very pleasant sounding. War theme is suspenseful and suitable for the scene.
Korea's civ4 theme is inferior

Maya coming soon

Mongolia: Traditional Mongolian Long Song (Urtiin Duu) composed by Geoff Knorr
This is a traditional form of Mongol singing. Not sure if it’s based on a specific Long Song. One of my favorite peace songs. It sounds like Chinese music b/c the Erhu and Mongolian string instrument share a common origin. The one used here is actually a cello. Knorr took this song from Silk Road Journeys: When Strangers Meet. The Long song is performed by Khongorzul Ganbaatar. War theme makes me think of the Mongol hordes destroying everything.
Mongol Internationale is ok, but I love the cello in this new theme.

Ottoman: Ceddin Deden composed by Geoff Knorr
Janissary marching band music, has hints of Beethoven and Mozart in the War Theme. Nice choice for the Ottoman theme. Especially like the war theme with its booming march music.
I like Mehmed's theme, not sure if based off real Turkish music

Persia: Morghe Sahar composed by Geoff Knorr
Song in Persian classical music tradition, music by Morteza Neydavood, poetry by Malakosho’araa-ye Bahaar, composed during later years of Qajar Dynasty. Very emotional song, reminds me of a Persia now long gone. War theme sounds very sad compared to others.
Hammurabi's code is not Persian, it's generic Middle Eastern.

Polynesia: Hole Waimea composed by Geoff Knorr
Spearmakers of Waimea, chant originally made for Kamehameha, war there also has “I ku mau” chant from I ku mau mau. Peace theme is very nice sounding. War theme sounds very cool.

Rome: Ancient Roman Melody Fragments composed by Michael Curran, orchestrated by Knorr
Not sure if this sounds like real Roman music, but it does evoke Rome. Curran got his fragments from here http://classics.uc.edu/music/michigan/index.html War theme reminds of all the legions marching out to vanquish their foes.
Rise of Augustus is meh for me.

Russia: Montagues and Capulets composed by Michael Curran, orchestrated by Knorr
Composed by Prokofiev, a famous Russian composer. Love his Battle on the Ice. Very forbidding theme. Reminds me of the coldness of Russia. Lyrics are found in a post below.
Catherine's old theme is catchy but what is it based on?

Siam: taken from a Northern Thai melody in The Garland Handbook of Southeast Asian Music (edited by Terry E. Miller, Sean Williams) composed by Michael Curran
Curran calls the source melody "Northern Thai". He used the music notes in the book, but realized he diverged from it. He also used other Thai songs he listened to when composing these themes. Peace theme is very inviting and warm. Ramkhamhaeng isn’t always friendly though. War theme is alright.
Suryavarman's theme is friendly, but is that really Khmer music?

Songhai: Gambia Folk Song composed by Michael Curran, orchestrated by Knorr
Not sure which Gambia folk song this is based on. Michael Curran told me he found it on youtube. There was a man playing an instrument similar to the banjo (log drums and kalimba in Curran's piece is similar) And isn’t Gambia not really the core of the Songhai empire. Perhaps they should have used something from Mali. One of my favorite peace themes. Fits with the background. There is a woman singing in the background, in which language I have no idea. Vocal parts are from samples Curran owns and he doesn't know what the lyrics are.
Mansa Musa theme had a lot of bells?

Spain: Viva La Quince Brigada composed by Geoff Knorr
Ay Carmela, Republican song dating from the Spanish Civil war, melody is a folk tune dating back to the early 19th century. Very good peace and war themes. It’s not that old of a song, but it works well for Spain. War theme sounds very heroic despite atrocities by Conquistadors.
Malaguena is good, but I love the Ay Carmela renditions.

Sweden coming soon

I wonder if ppl recognize any melodies in these little themes.

Helsinki: Very quick, I’ve read somewhere that this is based on Ievan Polkka, I’ve no idea if it’s true
Oslo: very solemn
Copenhagen: also quite solemn
Stockholm: more pleasant then Oslo and Copenhagen
Cape Town: One of my favorite city state themes, is it based on Dutch music?
Rio de Janeiro: Also a favorite, sounds very Brazilian/Portuguese possibly Garota de Ipanema song(Ipanema's Girl)
Warsaw: very solemn
Bucharest: quite short and catchy
Budapest: very solemn and slow, sounds like a forbidding place
Hanoi: Very noisy, does Vietnamese music actually sound like this?
Seoul: I guess this is supposed to be Korean, not that bad of a theme
Kuala Lumpur: Also a favorite, very Asian, gamelan
Singapore: Quite noisy and annoying
Ragusa: pleasant sounding
Genoa: pleasant sounding, does Italian music really sound like this?
Venice: also sounds similar to the two above
Vienna: pleasant sounding
Sidon: favorite, sounds Middle Eastern
Tyre: favorite, sounds Middle Eastern
Geneva: very formal and patriotic
Florence: pleasant sounding
Almaty: quite a nice theme, not sure if Kazakh music is really like this though
Belgrade: also favorite, sounds very Middle Eastern or Mediterranean
Brussels: very solemn
Dublin: a favorite, reminds me of the emerald island
Edinburgh: good theme, it lacks bagpipes though
Lhasa: Tibetan music, I presume
Monaco: very patriotic, possibly its national anthem?

Sydney: nope is the same
Quebec City: the same
They must have been lazy or the music was generic enough to use. Would have loved to see something like Waltzing Matilda for Sydney

Anyone have ideas on what these music are based on?

Angkor Wat-sounds Southeast Asian
Big Ben-European
Brandenburg Gate-European

Notre Dame-very pleasant sounding, also a favorite
Pentagon-very intense
Sistine Chapel-Church music, very mysterious
Statue of Liberty-like this theme, I live in New York state

Oracle-very puzzling
Porcelain Tower-favorite, Chinese music
Pyramids-Egyptian music, quite forbidding
Three Gorges Dam-very scary sounding, not Chinese at all
United Nations-quite dramatic, but the UN is horribly flawed
Scenario music
Conquest of the New World-composed by Michael Curran How Happy the Soldier, which was in Civ4 Colonization
Paradise Found (Composed by Geoff Knorr, includes Aloha e)-nice theme, they seem to like Hawaiian music too much, how about the others?
1066-composed by Michael Curran Sounds similar to Viking Music from Civ4, also based on Dromte mig en drom i nat and Nobilis Humilis
Japanese Invasion of Korea-Arirang composed by Michael Curran
Wonders of the Ancient World-composed by Michael Curran based on melodies found in work of music theoretician Suzanne Haik-Vantoura, who researched and deciphered musical notation thought be contained in the Bible

Some of the background music is nice too and I really enjoy BlackFootNights when that's playing. Feels very good for American civs.

Greek peace (Epitath of Seikilos) is probably one of my, if not favorite song in CiV. In general, almost all of the Leader music is amazing. In-game soundtrack is kinda lacking for me, but there are a few exceptions.

about Rio de Janeiro melody,it reminds me a brazilian music style that was born in Rio de Janeiro called Bossa Nova. it can be based in samba too,but bossa nova is more intellectual song. Probably based on Garota de Ipanema song(Ipanema's Girl).

These are the lyrics for Napoleon's War Theme
Lyrics are from fragments of the Latin Mass and fragments of "Chansons de Guerre pour Les Soldats Français au Moment de Combattre L'Ennemi," by The Citizen Nougaret. Paris, 1794; compiled by Michelle Menard.

O Domine, Jesu Christe rex gloriae
Libera animas defunctorum,
Libera eas de ore leonis
O Libera me.

Libera me, Domine, de morte aeterna
Domine, in die illa tremenda
Libera me dum veneris judicare saeculum per ignem.
Marchons, volons à la gloire,
Écrasons nos ennemis ;
On est sûr de la victoire,
Combattant pour son Pays,
Notre belliqueuse armée,
De Citoyens, de Soldats,
Dit à la terre opprimée,
Craignez moins vos Potentats.

O Domine, Jesu Christe rex gloriae,
ne absorbeat eas tartarus
ne cadant in obscurum
Hostias, Hostias et preces,
Hostias et preces tibi,
Domine laudis offerimus.
Domine, Requiem aeternam.
dona, Requiem is, aeternam.
et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Ciel bénis notre courage,
Et les Peuples sont heureux.

Ce n'est plus pour la querelle,
D'un Despote ambitieux
Que dans nos mains étincelle
Un glaive, un fer généreux,
Nous défendons la Patrie,
L'honneur et l'égalité
Qu'avec nous chacun s'écrie:
« Mourons pour la Liberté. »

English Translation:

O Lord Jesus Christ, King of Glory,
free the souls of the dead
free them from the mouth of the lion.
Free me.

Free me Lord, from eternal death.
On that day of dread,
when you shall come to judge the world by fire.

March! Fly towards glory,
We handedly vanquish our enemies,
One can be assured of victory.
Fighting for his Country,
Our battle-ready army
Of Citizens, of Soldiers,
Say to the oppressing world,
We are fearless of your Masters.

O Lord Jesus Christ, King of Glory,
do not let Hell swallow them up,
do not let them fall into darkness.
Sacrifices and prayers of praise,
we offer to you, Lord.
Grant eternal rest to them, Lord,
and let perpetual light shine on them.

Heaven, consecrate our courage
And the People will rejoice.

It is not only for the fight
Against an ambitious Despot
That in our bright hands
A sword, an altruistic Iron,
We will defend our Country,
Honor, and Equality,
With which each we cry:
"We die for Liberty."

Catherine themes lyrics
Lyrics are selections from The Bronze Horseman, by Aleksandr Pushkin, 1833, compiled by Michelle Menard.

Original Cyrillic:

'Latinized' Russian:
Krasujsâ, grad Petrov, i stoj
Nekolebimo, kak Rossiâ,
Osada! pristup! zlye volny,
Kak vory, lezut v okna. Čelny
S razbega stekla b'ût kormoj.
Lotki pod mokroj pelenoj,
Oblomki hižin, brevny, krovli,
Tovar zapaslivoj torgovli,
Požitki blednoj niŝety,
Grozoj snesennye mosty,
Groba s razmytogo kladbiŝa
Plyvut po ulicam!
Narod
Zrit božij gnev i kazni ždet.
Uvy! vse gibnet: krov i piŝa!
De budet vzât'?

English Translation:
City of Peter, just you shine
And stand unshakable as Russia!
Siege and assault! The evil waters
Thrust into windows, like slaughters.
The mad boats row into a glass.
The stalls are under the wet mass.
The wrecks of huts, the logs, roofs' pieces,
The stores of the tread, auspicious,
The things, carried the pale want from,
The bridges got away by storm,
The coffins from the graveyards - float,
Along the streets!
The populace
Sees God's great wrath and waits for death.
All is destroyed: bread and abode.
And how to live?

thanks goes to Geoff Knorr, one of the composers
Apparently, Inca, Egypt, and Rome themes are inspired by pre-existing music
also, I would like to find out the lyrics for India war theme, Songhai theme, and Denmark theme, though I prolly have to ask Michael Curran

Theres a generic track for American civs called "Dream of the Navajo". Its amazing. Just sayin...

Also, for anyone who is looking (cause they're sorta buried in the files), all the musical tracks can be found at :
Program files (x86)/Steam/SteamApps/common/sid meier's civilization v/assets/Sounds/Streamed/Music

i like quite a few of them and the soundtrack overall is less musical and more ambient which makes a better game experience when the music isnt grabbing you constantly.

however i like the music of both civ 5 and civ 4 quite a bit.

This is a well thought-out thread so I feel crappy giving this contribution, but:

the music is so bland to me that I don't even hear it. It just fades to the background and I don't know it's there.

I'm not one of the IV-deifying crowd, but I actually noticed that music. The song from Nixon in China, the opening song for vanilla and Warlords, and the music that played when you talked to the celts especially. But V..... damned if I can hum a single thing from it, I honestly don't even hear it. At all =/

I like Ramkhamhaeng's theme, too. I want to find that book to figure out the name of the original song.
I guess people miss the classical music from 4. But, I don't mind the ethnic music. Sure, they can sound similar (flutes in Native American songs), but they reflect the culture. Bach would be out of place for the Iroquois or the Chinese.

I still wonder about the lyrics for the Danish and Indian war themes. Anyone can help?

I really hate the musical direction of Civ 5.

I may be in the minority, but I think that most of the music (both leader themes and overworld) are weak and have a slow tempo. There are few exceptions. I much preferred the Civ 4 music...there were slow gregorian chants, but there were also quick-tempo pieces from bach, dvorjak, and others. The leader themes in that game were much better IMO (Brennus and Washington ftw).

Civ 5 seems to have soft, sappy sleepy music. I don't like to be put to sleep when I'm playing.

I don't see how Civ 5's war theme music would put you to sleep. Have you heard the stirring English war theme, or the energetic Spanish one? It's true Civ 4 had snappier leader music, and more memorable leader music, but frankly I think they were of lower musical quality, with the exceptions of the Celtic, Byzantine and a few other themes. Mayans' Pacal leader theme was truly horrendous in Civ 4.

I also LOVE the Siam peace theme. I play it on my accordion along with the France peace theme. Japan Peace theme is also wonderful. Aztec on peace is also a killer track when you are scouting early game, you really feel a chill when you roam on the jungles. It happens to me with almost every themes, I believe the only one I truly dislike is Askia peace.

I love pretty much all of the leader themes and think they're a vast step up on Civ IV's. Yeah, the Celts' theme were fantastic, but I'm sure that if/when we get the Celts, Curran and Knorr will whip up something amazing, too. I dislike Askia's war theme, but his peace one is a favorite of mine

Of the generic themes, my clear favorite is Elipse (Europe war). I'm also a big fan of some of the American themes that have a cello-sounding instrument, but I sadly dunno what they're named.
