I just received my copy of Civ IV Complete (the European version from gogamer.com).

I notice that the game is not packaged in a box; instead, it's inside a shrink-wrapped plastic case about the size of a DVD movie (about 1.5 cm thick). I'm guessing there's no printed manual inside, which is somewhat disappointing.

Before I open the shrink-wrap and lose my ability to return the game, could somebody confirm my suspicion that there's no printed manual inside?

Also, if there's no printed manual, please advise whether there's some sort of electronic manual inside, like a PDF file.

I bought Civ IV GOLD (Vanilla + Warlords) and Civ IV BTS after that. All of which came in the conventional PC game box size (I prefer the smaller size personally...). None of which had printed manuals. That was in North America too. Manuals were in pdf form on the CDs themselves, but there are great resources on this website for more up to date info... Like here

I bought CIVIV complete as well. The box was smaller, but there was a manual and tech chart poster inside. The manual was small and I suspect smaller and cheaper than what you'd get buying the game individually.

It seems like you'd have to pay ~$40 more to get individual games with nice manuals (based on my last trip to Best Buy) though. Those are expensive manuals :( .

Meh, I was disappointed with the BtS manual, the pdf guide (I assume that's the link posted by SimonL) is far better. The warlords manual was better than the BtS one. BtS manual doesn't even have the unit strengths or leader traits listed, it is basically a rush-job.

I lent vanilla disc to my friend but I recall the manual being good in general (although not up to date with patches and containing a few mistakes). It was nice and thick though, a bit daunting at first.

I'm not a fan of e-book instruction manuals myself, I'd rather be able to flick through manuals while I am running the game full-screen.

It appears that Civilization IV Complete is somewhat incomplete.

It contains a "Quick Start" guide and a Tech Tree poster. After installation you will find:

C:\Program Files\2K Games\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Complete
- a 4 part PDF Manual

C:\Program Files\2K Games\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Complete\Beyond the Sword
- BTS Manual

C:\Program Files\2K Games\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Complete\Warlords
- Warlords Manual

Personally - I haven't opened any of them yet...I just jumped in and played.

There is at least one upside to this UK version - only 1 disc to keep track of and not 3!

i just have civ 4 and it had a fairly large manual, and it said its the abriged version, its like a quarter of a inch think and has about 120 pages... hold on ill get it and look at it now

nope cant find it... i had it out just yesterday, anyways it said that my cd 2 was the complete manual. I got 3 cds for the vanilia version.

I'm getting a "file not found" error when I try to download that PDF file. Are there any other places I can get it?

I don't mean to impose (although I'm going to anyway :)), but could you take a quick look at those manuals and let me know how many pages they are? Also, if you can tell, can they be printed on 8 1/2 by 11 paper, or are they designed for European size paper (A5, or whatever they call it)?

The thing is that these manuals are probably outdated by now, considering patching and all.

As for you not being able to get the file I pointed to because of "file not found" problems, well I think it may be because the forums were recently hacked and lost a lot of files in the database. If you wait for a few days or remind them in that thread, maybe the original poster of the file will put it up, or someone else who has it.

No problem. When I get home after work I will do so.

OK, here we go. I'm not sure what European size paper dimensions are, but with the PDF open if you look at properties they are roughly 7" x 9" - so smaller than ours but each page would print on one of our pages.

The Vanilla manual totals 224 pages technically but the useful stuff ends on page 195. After that is credits, warranty and blank pages for notes. Part 1 = 18 pages; Part 2 = 78 pages; Part 3 = 72 pages and Part 4 = 56 pages.

The Warlords and BTS manuals are booket types? Meaning 2 "pages" per page. ie. pages 4 and 5 are 1 physical piece of paper. They are landscaped but the properties of 9" x 7" are the same.

Warlords is 109 numbered pages but useful stops on 101. This is 55 total physical pieces of paper (ie. 55 screens in Adobe) and the useful stuff stops on 51.

BTS is 54 numbered pages but info stops on 44. Actual pieces of paper is 29 and the useful stuff stops on 23.

Hope that was clear and what you were looking for.
