Civilization VII - Gameplay Reveal Trailer (Gamescom Opening Night Live - 8/20) Discussion

Okay, now that I've watched the showcase, I hate changing civs less than I did at first (though I'm still leery about it). The leaders look better in the showcase than in the trailer, but they still look bland. The leaders need polish, obviously at this stage, but they need more than that; they lack any sort of style or flare or interest. The map and cities, on the other hand, look stunning. But leaders staring at each other from opposite sides of the screen has to change. Leaders should interact with the player, not stare at each other. That's a very, very, very bad design. I love crises; it's like R&F's forgotten dark ages perfected. And I adore culture-specific civics.
going back to our exchange before the showcase, I'm def willing to give it a shot but the info that we've seen is not necessarily instilling confidence for me.

The straw that broke the camel's back for me is a) that they've made a Hausa queen the presumable leader of the Songhai and that b) the natural "historical" progressions...aren't that historical

I'd also be able to forgive it if we could somehow keep the civs all the way through (especially if doing so doesn't put as at a disadvantage) or if there's a classic mode

This is a concern for me as well, though hopefully it will get (somewhat) better over time (and probably better for some civs than others--e.g., Zhou > Han > Ming or Achaemenid > Sassanid > Safavid is easy enough; Rome > Francia > France is iffier but why not; outside of Europe I predict things get dicier).

There appears to have been no mention of religion. I wonder if they're keeping it a secret or maybe it's not a base game mechanic.

It looks to me like it will be expansion material. I'm...sort of okay with that if we get a more robust system out of it and not just a third clone of Civ5's religion system, which has a lot of flaws IMO.

The unique Egypt civcs looked pretty religion-y to me. Maybe they're rolled into that.
That's why I don't think there will be religion in the base game. Egypt's unique buildings are both temples, yet they're described as a "Gold building" and "Culture building."

Update: the Shawnee have a unique Missionary. Religion must be in the game after all.

Interesting, it seems that religion will be worked on in era 2 onwards.

Which feels weird when most of the world's major religions date to Antiquity. Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Zoroastrianism--maybe Islam, depending on the end date.

Maybe they really just haven't shown it because it's heavily WIP . I presume it's one system they'll have the whole way through the game, so it's probably interacting with a lot of mechanics, if they're doing a large overhaul.

The policy cards are back I think. Eat your heart out 😁
Policy cards are back, but it looks like government doesn't determine your card slots, instead determining your festival choices.

Im torn on this one. On one hand, I agree with you. On the other hand, I always wanted to see my leader during my games besides the static picture when loading.

I think this is where I step off the Civ series. After being let down by Civ V and heartbroken by VI, all I'm seeing here is disappointment after disappointment. Implementing one of Humankind's most controversial features is an extremely risky move, totally divorced from what Civ is about. Three eras only seems extremely low, with very jarring transitions from Antiquity to Exploration to Modern eras. No mention of how ancient, medieval and future eras will be handled. Preorder bonuses for additional civs, alternative "personas" and early access turn the sour taste in my mouth into faecal matter. Seems a pass from me.
