Civilization VII - Gameplay Reveal Trailer (Gamescom Opening Night Live - 8/20) Discussion

If they offer a free demo like the good old days of yore, I'll certainly try it. I remember Civ VI having a demo, to be fair to Firaxis. I won't believe a single word that comes out of the army of gurning "influencer" and "content creator" cretins as the entire YouTube scene is compromised with paid-for advertisements.

I've always cherished the experience of playing as the same civilization throughout an entire game—a core aspect of my gaming that I've never questioned. This attachment is why I've struggled to give Humankind the fair chance it truly deserves, despite its many strengths and innovations. To be clear, it's not the visuals, mechanics, or other elements that cause my hesitation; it's solely the mechanic of switching civilizations with each new era that I find so off-putting. This, for me, is what ultimately diminishes Humankind in comparison to the undisputed giant in this genre, Civilization.

Now, I'm left feeling disheartened because, despite all that Civilization gets right—its stunning visuals, its fresh approach—I can't move past the absence of that continuous connection with a single civilization. As a result, I'll likely continue playing the older Civilization games, and it might be another decade before I consider trying a new version, like Civ VIII. But even then, I fear it may drift even further from the aspects of the series that I hold dear.

There are a few things that had me deflated while even watching the trailer for the first time. Flashy graphics are all good and fine, but we are playing a supposedly strategic game and often, more is less is such games. The map looks overloaded with clutter.
I play Civ to play civilizations to stand the test of time, no to play leaders that stand the test of time swapping civilizations per era. That's an insta turn off. Now, I saw from some CCs that techs sort of reset with the beginning of a new era. Coupled with the fact that all civilizations (or should I say, leaders) move to the next era together, one can't really move ahead or fall behind in terms of technology. I enjoyed the challenges to come from far behind in high difficulty games via trading or other means. Not liking the look of this.
The big question remains and won't be answered for some time, how capable is the AI to deal with all this, with the new commander and his army as an added complexity.
I am old enough now to wait and not buy at day 1, been burned several times now. Not like the purchase is going to be cheap ayway.

Exactly. The content creators know not to bite the hand that feeds them. Take everything they say with a mountain of salt.

I'm excited, but I definitely thought Augustus was Nero for a bit after the first trailer and that's how you know the models need some... polish.

And just like Civ6 narrator. she doesn't speak GenAm.

Did GenAm English became less appealing today? while I came from Thailand. I speaks GenAm just like my father does.
Is GenAm American? Because both narrators are from Great Britain, so they have a British accent.

GenAm = General American. It's not really a thing, but Inland North accent is pretty close.

Yes.
the Civ5 Narrator speaks GenAm. as well as I do.

This is what I like more about Civ7. Basic galley and Polyreme (both are my conjecture unit names.) design are now more historical accurate.

^ this lil 'Roman Galley' looks more like Egyptian galley, while Egyptian polyreme (should be Quinquereme. no more mislabelling please) looks ironically GrecoRoman to me.
though historically Alexander did conquer Egypt (he took it from Persia), and with his empire fell, it Ptolemey ruled Egypt and Egyptian navy is now helllenized..

and i love this becuz this polyreme has more pair of oars than Civ6 Quadrireme (also mislabled and mis-positioned).

No, W. Morgan Sheppard was English. Leonard Nimoy was the only American narrator of Civ.
that voiceactor who did New Emperor of Destruction Galvatron voiceact in Transformers the Movie (1986, animated by Toei Doga?, and full of Leijimeters panel?)

more screenshots I took..

An egyptian fleet, Two cogs and one Nau / Carrack.

And one Asian 'Galley' (or polyreme?)

I mean, do you have to "believe" them though if you're watching a play of the game? You won't know everything but you could certainly get an idea of the game and whether or not it's for you.

More from what i've saw on YT (digested 25 minutes clip rather than long TWO HOURS)

1724252051115.png

^ Trainstation. a European Trainstation with American steam locomotives. (note that European trains tend to be smaller than American counterparts, even with it runs on the same standard gauge (1.435 meters wide))

1724252285771.png

^ A big warship (Either Nau or Galleon) dukes out against a lil Eastern Gun Galley (likely Aceh galleass @Boris Gudenuf mentioned earlier), this big ship to the left might have been of Portugal.
1724252515980.png

^ A fleet of galleon (same ship as above, so it should be galleon to me) and an asian junk ship.

And if Napoleon ever goes further South into deep Africa beyond Egypt as Emperor.
1724252901567.png

^ And new army, one that has fusilier in front, and two fieldguns behind, all wore 1810s era uniform, and not of 18th Century.

this seems to certify that Industrial Era now begins late.

1724253147899.png

^ Possibly the same ship that duked out against Portuguese Nau early on. it might be Majpahit 'monster galleass'.
1724253297267.png

^ Ming musketeer? (or more correctly, 'fusilier' )?
1724253501492.png
^ Siam?
1724253691829.png

^ And Revolutionary General Napoleon Bonaparte wears long hair, he didnt' get a haircut until 1800, even in 18th Brumaire Coup d'Etate he still wears long hair and even cravat.

Ships are big in Civ7, and I love it.

Just one more snapshot pic.

1724254054428.png

^ A fleet of smaller warships (either DD (it might be of Kagerou class) or CL, VS Two Superdreadnoughts (Firaxis loved Iowa class so much, why ain't they use Yamato class instead?).
1724254299174.png

^ Three T34s and two basic rifle infantry VS a staunch defense composed of two Shermans, One Mech Infantry (now this unit comes earlier), and two simple rifle infantry. all now engaged in ranged combat. Troop carrier design has become evenmore exciting. i don't know if it is either Bren gun carrier or Ram?

1724254585999.png

^ Counterattack! now featuring Self propelled artillery (of... maybe Longtom?)

1724254755796.png

^ And should this be 'pre industrial (or Pre modern)' fashion now? or still associable with 'Early Modern' era? (first phase of the Three Ages system).

Footage is easily doctored, facts omitted and shortcomings brushed over. I prefer to let a large number of reviews do the talking.
