Civilization VII Update 1.3.1 - December 9, 2025

Impressions from my current first game (Sayyida with Aksum on immortal):
The bad: The new leader is very underwhelming in antiquity, considering how long it takes to complete an espionage mission. In the same time I could build or buy several boats. That little extra culture and influence is hardly relevant.
The good: That new map script "shattered seas" is fantastic. There are a lot of strategic options to be considered: which landmass is reachable? Where should I settle? Could a naval attack on my neighbor be successful? Best improvement in the patch for me so far.

Full list of unlocks for Iceland:
- Edward Teach
- Isabella
- Jose Rizal
* Rome

Full list of unlocks for Ottomans:
- Ibn Battuta
- Sayyida al Hurra

Iceland only unlocks America.

Rome is now pre-requisite for eight different civilizations, continuing to prove antiquity Europe is fine and requires no urgent attention.

Russia is being used by some top players to absolutely dominate in modern by ignoring the settlement cap in previous ages. To me, this is more of an issue with settlement cap than with Russia. Nerf to America is silly. Why do companies always go so hard with nerfs?

For a science victory, the Lyceums legacy is available to everyone and much more impactful than Russia's ability. I think Russia is still fairly good for science in modern, the buff to production on cities they added doesn't hurt. Besides, after Japan and Russia there aren't really that many good options.

For the settlement cap, I think it's good that Ashoka can achieve a higher settlement count, but maybe not unlimited, one way to address that would be for unhappiness to cap out at something higher than -35. I assume for any other leader it won't really matter because they can't realistically get +35 happiness / settlement at it is.

Liking the new map changes and the extra wonder is a nice surprise.

Not to nitpick too much with free content and theres only so much you can do with square rigged ships, but blinging up the corsairs with a few more flags and penants would make them feel more special and easier to differentiate at a glance to ship of the line. They feel a bit samey at the moment.

Seriously though, fish and whales on sea tiles is a great idea. Finally makes ocean tiles relevant.

Did anyone’s UI/font scale change with the update? Can’t seem to change it at all either no matter what I pick (tv/pc or any font scale size)

I noticed that my windowed mode selection didn't look right anymore, the windows 10 taskbar was showing. I checked my resolution and it was changed to auto from 4k. It was still displaying at 4k but the setting changed to auto. So I'd recommend checking your resolution and see if you can turn it higher.

Found the patch note now, so editing:
  • The player’s Diplomacy panel now automatically opens on the player’s civ and leader uniques, and now shows Traditions. For items with a prerequisite tech/civic, the unlock requirement is now also listed.
For the live of me, I can't understand why, and the patch note provides no clues. It's a bit of an UX fail, honestly.

Specifically, it is extremely annoying when I'm trying to check which independent powers are currently unclaimed. Before you had to do this click:

Then click on one here:

and then click on the city portrait to go back to this list. As of 1.3.1, I always get sent back to the wrong tab:

So I need an extra click on the heart to go back to what I was doing.

Please revert this.

...or even try to find a certain IP in the first place...or check if there are any expansionist IPs on the current map...or...

It's an old request, a very old one, but I want to say it again: We NEED a proper search function, ASAP!!!
There was a mod called "Moxl Map Search" which has stopped working some patches ago. So a search function is possible within Civ7, isn't it?

That's a real shame. I just learned that this was possible last patch. It made managing IPs so much better. I hadn't played enough of the new patch to realize it was broken.
Yeah, the UI was always a bit clunky there - why aren't the icons coloured by city-state type for one? - but this made it even less convenient to use. And I'm struggling to undestand what problem always defaulting to ability tab (instead of keeping the sticky selection) could possibly even be solving. Just baffling.

You are right, it was changed to auto…but setting back to native 4k rez of monitor didn’t change anything. The ui/font scale is now very small and none of the settings to change it or enlarge it works.

This patch came in very hot it seems, runs a lot choppier on my end as well.
