Civilization

aww, it's over? oh well, it was good while it lasted. I can't wait to see what else the philosopher king have in store

Aye! Maybe do another story about that they build an space shuttle with all of the stories about the Philosopher Kings! That way, When the other barbaric trive find it on another world, they think it as a god of there

Thanks to all who've commented. I'm glad you enjoyed the story.

I guess it's clear now that the game itself was a bit too easy.

A little background: I'd come up with the basic idea for this story way back in June when I started playing Civ again after a year-long hiatus. I went through one whole run and outlined a draft of the story to match the gameplay, but I wasn't satisfied with it and started over after BNW came out.

During that first draft, the antagonist doppelgänger was in command of the Aztecs, but was never able to mount a serious threat to the Greeks. He was on a whole other continent and had an early setback with the Huns invading (I had, until then, never faced off against the Huns and was shocked by the power of the battering ram; that's why I picked them for the second version). Also, Greece was isolated on an island by themselves and it ended up slowing them down a great deal; so much so, in fact, that I lost the game to Russia, who got their spaceship out before I could win diplomatically.

So when I started this game, I turned down the difficulty so that I could make the Huns more of a threat. Which they were at the time of the Hun-Greek war. After that, I tried to rebound with them and did pretty well. I'm sure I could've beaten any of the AIs, but Greece was just untouchable by then.

Anyway, I think it all worked out pretty well for the story and I'm fairly happy with it. Katarina especially was a much more important character in this final story than in the outline I'd written for the previous game. She helped make the story more interesting to write and it was really enjoyable all told, but now I've got to get Civ out of my head so I can dedicate attention to some other projects (including finishing the revision on my NaNoWriMo book, which has been simmering on the back burner while I binged on Civ game after Civ game. Damn, BNW is good!).

So again, I hope you all enjoyed it. It was a lot of fun to write, but it's time for me to take a long, long break from Civ. (Like "See you when Civ 6 comes out" long.)

Thanks for the story Hemling, I feel quite spoiled with the multiple daily updates and was so sad to finally see it end. Great writing as always and I'm already looking forward to your Civ 6 story.

has civ 6 even been announced yet?

Well, this remains one of the best stories I've ever read. Great work, and see you when Civ VI comes out!

Oh my, Civilization is ending and Into the Future is? Man I don't know what I'm going to do. But anyway I'll see ya in Civ 6 :D

ah, excellent, well, i guess i'll see you in 2016 helmling :D

I would also like to add my voice to the choir and congratulate you for such a great story. Followed it since day one and enjoyed every bit of it. It even inspired me to play more and even write (though I have no time for it now, but one day I will haha). See you when Civ 6 comes out!

Great story! I love all the meta-considerations, explanations for the game mechanics, philosophical explorations, and the surprise leader of the Huns! And getting a post per turn written is quite an accomplishment! :salute:

This story totally deserves more attention and some kind of a forum reward or something. At least be put in sticky or something. It must get more attention.

I just read all the way through, and I have to add my voice to the chorus of well-dones. The way you integrated and lampshaded the way Civ works really adds to the story.

Thank you for writing this story, Helmling. I enjoyed it immensely!

When reading it, I remembered how much more immersed I used to be in the game I was playing; I now feel like playing again.

I just finished this, and I have to say, its one of the best things I've ever read. Thanks for writing this, it was simply fantastic.

Helmling (re)lurking around the Stories and Tales forum? Time for a conspiracy theory!

Well after your tieing two stories from two profiles into one, there's always been conspiracy theories about your next move. Especially so now, when you've been silent for a while.
