Did you reseed the map? I get this whenever I reseed the map, I fix it by saving the game, going back out to the main menu, then reloading the game (after loading the mods again, of course).

Generally mods never play nicely with the "Restart Map" feature.

Questions

1) Do you have logging turned on?
1a) Do you have any lua.log files that you could post? This could help identify where it may be going wrong.
2) What version of civ5 vanilla are you running? This was a pretty common bug with apple users when the november patch came out and for people who couldn't/hadn't updated. .

Reseeding is a separate problem related to the reloading errors in lua code for mods, but if it happens right off the bat, it's probably a compatibility issue from an older version of civ5 running.

Problem was fixed after updating my Civ to the fall patch. Works fine now, although GEM is causing a terrible game pace. The "please wait" period for AI to finish their turns has increased around 10x. I normally don't expect long wait periods until around turn 250, but now it's already slow before I hit turn 50. Is this normal?

GEM does increase the turn times processing, but it shouldn't be by that much. For me it tends to add around 25-30% of the turn time that I would get from vanilla, rising later in the game.

I believe most of the early-game turn time comes from citystates starting with a few units in GEM (to deter players from stealing their workers). Citystates tend to shuffle their units around, which adds to the time required for each citystate to run its turn.
