Warlord
The great Prussian philosopher of the Napoleonic Era made 4 points that made a great commander in his work On War, I believe these are applicable to our situation in Civ 5.
1. "assess probabilities"
2. "act with the utmost concentration"
3. "act with utmost speed"
4. "absolute war requires the primacy of politics" or the subordination of the means of warfare to foreign policy
I picked up these points from Niall Ferguson's Civilization page 158.
After winning with all the new civs on Emperor I'm moving up to Immortal and finding myself lagging a bit.
1: I'm having a hard time wonder building, even on tiny maps, I also don't have a grasp yet of when the AI will likely attack/how big an army I need early.
2. Dumb mistakes, misplaced cities, not scouting enough, not micro-managing cities.
3. Too often I find myself bidding my time while my eventual enemies build to destroy me.
4. First game attacked a city-state and earned warmongering status (B-17s shortly reversed all my previous gains.
