I have been claiming that the body politic in the US is suffering from serious, possibly terminal, disease since the Bush years. The voters are largely irrelevant; the problem is that so much of the 'political structure' (as you call it, in the US this is effectively synonymous with 'the ruling classes') backs Trump. Fact is that the billionaire class and the large corporations largely opposes Trump only inasmuch as they see him as a threat to profits. And there is a "bipartisan consensus" on policy, which a huge number of so-called liberals explicitly want to return to, that is not all that different from Trump in substance.

So I'm not feeling the outrage I thought this would provoke so let me expand -

The National Restaurant Association has asked the Trump administration to end rules that forbid pooling of tips between front of the house and back of the house employees. Most cooks are not tipped and most servers are. It is illegal to share tips between them to equalize pay (and LOL they are not going to voluntarily raise wages for the back of the house). Ostensibly, this rule would allow owners to take tips from the front and give them to the back. This raises wages for the back of the house but of course it's a 'rob Peter to pay Paul' situation in that it is at best a wash for wages overall but a big loss for the front of the house.

Of course, however, this ruling does not stop the owners from just keeping all the wages or some portion thereof. This legalizes wage theft at a basic level.

It also does nothing to address the rampant abuses already present in that tipped servers are not usually covered when their wages+tips fall below minimum. It also completely undermines the (stupid) rationale for tipping in the first place - to reward good service with higher wages.

Also, the government broke their own rules in publishing this proposed rule change (which will likely go through). They had no hearings and published no reports on the benefits and costs of the new rules. They claim they didn't produce a report at all (whaa it's too hard!) but rumor is a report was produced and then squashed internally because it showed what a nightmare situation this will be for workers.

Guys, they are now going after the wages of the poorest members of society. RAGE

My first career was as a chef. 100% you can be assured that owners will keep a healthy chunk of the tips they confiscate - just like they already keep 'delivery fees' that people think go to drivers (they don't) and just like they allow rampant sexual harassment, assaults and a long list of federal workforce protection violations to happen. Restaurants are the worst.

So I'm not feeling the outrage I thought this would provoke so let me expand -

My initial reaction to this was *sigh* "this happens already, unfortunately"... there are places I eat where I know to tip cash because a card-written tip wont actually get to the folks you intended. I tip the pizza/Chinese etc., delivery guy the same as I tip waiter because I've done the job and I know how effed those guys are... ruining their car and burning up gas with zero employer-reimbursement... So I'm not feeling the outrage I thought this would provoke so let me expand -

The National Restaurant Association has asked the Trump administration to end rules that forbid pooling of tips between front of the house and back of the house employees. Most cooks are not tipped and most servers are. It is illegal to share tips between them to equalize pay (and LOL they are not going to voluntarily raise wages for the back of the house). Ostensibly, this rule would allow owners to take tips from the front and give them to the back. This raises wages for the back of the house but of course it's a 'rob Peter to pay Paul' situation in that it is at best a wash for wages overall but a big loss for the front of the house.

Of course, however, this ruling does not stop the owners from just keeping all the wages or some portion thereof. This legalizes wage theft at a basic level.

It also does nothing to address the rampant abuses already present in that tipped servers are not usually covered when their wages+tips fall below minimum. It also completely undermines the (stupid) rationale for tipping in the first place - to reward good service with higher wages.

Also, the government broke their own rules in publishing this proposed rule change (which will likely go through). They had no hearings and published no reports on the benefits and costs of the new rules. They claim they didn't produce a report at all (whaa it's too hard!) but rumor is a report was produced and then squashed internally because it showed what a nightmare situation this will be for workers.

Guys, they are now going after the wages of the poorest members of society. RAGE

My first career was as a chef. 100% you can be assured that owners will keep a healthy chunk of the tips they confiscate - just like they already keep 'delivery fees' that people think go to drivers (they don't) and just like they allow rampant sexual harassment, assaults and a long list of federal workforce protection violations to happen. Restaurants are the worst.
