For some reason I appear to lose the ability to create colonies later in the game.

It's not crucially important, I'd just like to create a lot of civs subserviant to me from my massive empire.

Can anyone shed any light on this or is my game broken? :S

Unless you modify the game, I don't believe you can have more than 18 civilizations in a game. Perhaps you are playing a huge map with multiple other colonies and can't move past that limit?

Are you sure there haven't been a total of 18 civs throughout the game? Destroying a civ will not free up its slot for use by a colony, except in the buggy 3.13 official patch. (If you did exceed the 18 civ limit under that patch you'll get bugs with war declarations and culture due to the civ overwriting an existing one).

So what are the options for using Colonies with 18 CIV Huge maps?
I just started playing 18 CIV games instead of the default 11ish on Huge, not realizing there was this hard cap built in.

Wolfshanze has a modified DLL, but looks like that changes rules too.

Or are there even any options for colonies and 18+ CIV games...

Erm, I don't know how.
But it doesn't matter. I'll reload it and try again, probably a one-time flaw.
Thanks anyway.

Ahhhh.... so even if you destroy a civ on an 18 civ map, you can't create a colony in it's place? That would explain my predicament. Thanks

How big is the island? You need at least 2 cities on a landmass to create a colony, so a small island that can only hold 1 city won't allow a colony. I think a landmass is any bit of land and anything connected by other land and/or coast (not ocean), but I'm not sure.

No, two pieces of land divided by coast count as seperate landmasses. I was playing the Earth map and I had the option to make Britain a colony even though my capital was in Europe.
