In my current game I've conquered about a third of the other continent, and would like to grant the colonies independence - I have "Friendly" with almost everyone, because I have the apostolic palace and they almost all follow my religion. For some reason when I give them independence, though, my former allies all declare war on my colony and me, as well as the colony's neighbor (which was previously cautious).
Why does this happen? Is it based on the relations they had with the Civ I conquered?
