When does the Combat promotion get taken into account? If I have a Knight with Combat I, I'd expect to see his Strength listed as 11, but it remains at 10. This makes it difficult to gauge how beefed up my units are getting.

The listing when you select the unit doesn't change, but if you view the combat odds when you attack an enemy, you will see the 10% bonus. All promotions are only applied in terms of percentage bonuses when actually engaged in combat. Obviously, movement bonuses such as Woodsman II or Guerilla II always apply, and promotions like Medic aren't always apparent.
