Using the latest version(1.16.1)
Getting empty map without using any mods
Game over screen before first move..
Anyone knows whats going on?
Something in the code must have removed all land tiles from the map. Probably rare occurrence since no one else has reported the same problem.

Something like that can happen when the code overflows. A neverending loop or something like that can cause it. But it is very rare. Creating a new game should fix it.

If it happens to you every time, then you have not installed or downloaded it properly. Place the file in Documents>My Games>Civ V>Maps, unzip it, and create your game again.

Any way to force the game to remember map settings (World Age, Resource Placement, etc.)? Also, what does Legendary Start and Strategic Balance do?

Legendary Start: same as vanilla, places more bonus resources around your starting position.
Strategic Balance: places a 2-iron tile and a 2-horse tile 4-6 hexes (prioritizes closer but strictly follows terrain restrictions) from your starting position.

Do both of these apply to the AI as well, or just for the human player?

Settings are remembered as soon as you save one game with said settings. Check ingame advanced options if this is not the case for you.

For some reason the settings are not saving for me. What options do I have to check?

All players.

Can't remember exactly where. Dig into the options, or config, or whatever it is called.
It is saved in one text file in the following directory:
Documents>My Games>Civ V>config.txt and UserSettings.txt

tu, I'm about to rise from the dead, and of course will be playing my first game with the latest version of this map.

Slowing me down at the moment is that my ancient PC is giving me a green screen I can't get past, and the fact that I otherwise use a Mac. I was wondering if going super-cheap with a Chromebox + Linux on Steam would work at all, and work with VP... or if I'm better off partitioning my Mac... or if I should scavenge the 6GB of RAM plus decent graphics card from my green PC and buy a used box somewhere.

Any suggestions?

Regardless, expect a report from me within the next two weeks. I hope you and your family are well, now that the Guardia won't fire on you if you step outside.

Any suggestions?
A solid state hard disk is what I like more of my recent PC. It boots in 5 seconds with Win10, and just a bit slower with Linux. I've recently installed Manjaro in a friend's laptop and it flies.

From your list of options I gather that you are pretty tight on budget. I don't think a Chromebox can handle it. Or any nettop. Besides, you'd want to play other games from time to time.

A little background: My PC case is an old Antec minuet 300 which I love, and I've run three different mobos in this case already. I bought it in 2007. Whenever there was a game that I wanted to play but the PC could not handle, I purchased an upgrade, if I could afford it. Current one is holding a i3-3220, 16GB RAM (from 2014), and an addition of a GeForce GTX 1050 (small form factor, from 2017), which runs pretty much everything I wanted to play since the last three years. (Except My Time at Portia, who is very hungry).

What works for me might not work for you, but I really think that it is worth to invest in a good case, a good power supply and good silent fans. My current favourite case is the Corsair 110Q, it is the best by quality/price of the modern silent cases, and it's already 60€ without the PSU. It has dust filters, noise dumping, cable management, and the PSU is located in the base, which helps ventilation. A dust free, heat controlled environment increases the life expectancy of your components.
So I say, scavenge what you can from your old PC, take a good case (new or second hand), and replace your broken components. Unless you know the vendor, don't buy mobo, CPU or GPU second handed, as they are probably burned, but you know, there are many spoiled kids that just want to have the very last GPU on market, and they sell their one year old GPUs that might be just right. I think having a dedicated gaming PC is better in the long run, since you don't mess it with your daily computing needs.

I hope you and your family are well
We are, thanks! Our elders have not felt the illness yet.

now that the Guardia won't fire on you
They won't. Half of my wife's family wears trihorned hats or blue hats :D

Very funny!

Thanks a lot for your advice. I am not so much low on funds as I am being cheap because I wouldn't use the PC for anything other than VP. I'll let you know what I wind up doing — once I have it done!

So just a quick update on my quest to make chunkier continents / semi-pangaea:
- Reducing the scatter global variables in the script a little bit kind of helps.
- To my surprise, rift width (wide) actually makes blockier continents as well (or so it seems!). I've actually been using 1 rift, wide rift width, and higher sea level (to compensate for blockier continents), and it's pretty nice!

One quick pet peeve I've seen:
- City states located near the poles (especially on fatter continents) sometimes aren't accessible by water trade routes. They spawn on land with a small pool of ocean and ice is completely blocking any path through ocean to them. I'm guessing the scripting requires them to have ocean in their immediate vicinity, but your adding ice to block out the original north/south pole canals means access to these city states by ocean is unavailable.
- This only happens to maybe 2-3 out of 16 city states, so it's not a huuuuge problem, but it's there.
- On this note, is there an easy way to add back the water canals in the north/south poles? Or maybe just convert a bunch of ice to ocean tiles?

Just some notes, still loving the map.

City states aren't required to be coastal, though they do seem to always have access to water (so lakes count). Just an observation.

Stupid question: how to install this map? Am I supposed to change the name and paste it to VP or maybe to main civ folder? There's no modinfo for this map.

I copy pasted what I said before for installation. Let me know if it works for you.

First impression after creating your map is that it is much smaller than base maps. I modified Natural Wonders spawn and after multiple checks I got average of 8 on fractal small map. On yours I got only 5, where 2 were on small island with me, england and 2 CSs. Is it intended for this map to be so small? All with default settings.

It's supposed to be as big as Continents mapscript. Based on map size and land percentage. You have room for settling an average of 7 cities before fighting. So I don't know why the fewer natural wonders. Is it consistent or just one map?

I will do further checking, but we were fit so tightly on the island, that there was maybe room for 2 cities each. I will inform you about what I have.

I checked few more times.
  • You said that each civ can settle 7 cities before confrontation. I would say 5 would be good. But even now it seems pretty random and some civs are squished between others so they will be able to settle 2, maybe 3 cities, and there are others who will have opportunity to settle even 10 cities without any problems.
  • Your mod is not compatible with Even More Resources from @HungryForFood. Why? Tectonics is relatively old script and has no problems with that. Could you fix this?
  • Amount of NWs placed is much lower than on same size Fractal map. I got average of 5, once I got 9. I will try to do some checking for Continents script to have nice comparison.

1. Fine. It should be random. 7 cities is an average. It may be a little less due to coastal variation. Note that islands and polar regions are usually worth settling.
2. No idea. Was Communitas compatible? If it was, I could try to find the piece of code that was removed.
3. I didn't touch anything related to natural wonders, so it puzzles me.

I didn't play communitas earlier.
