CDG 29 – Sejong

Please see the CDG Series Discussion Thread to express yourself if you have remarks and ideas. Some maps in the series use mods. This map uses the DLC map packs, so you will need “Explorers Map Pack”, “Scrambled Nations”, and “Scrambled Continents”, as well as the earlier (and more common) DLC such as “Wonders of the Ancient World”.

Please provide a screenshot of your victory turn. We also very much encourages pictures and stories related to the achievements and keys point in the game – because it’s fun to read for all of us! Restart or reload as you like, but in your write-up (which does not have to be long) please describe the challenges you faced.

We welcome all comments and questions, but please use the SPOILER tag if you attach a picture, make a comment about which civs are in the game, about natural wonders, locations of ancient ruins, terrain features, luxes, resources, etc. In short, if it’s information you can only know by playing the game, don’t spoil it for others by divulging this information in the open. Thank you for your cooperation, and have fun!

Before you download and play the map, please take a moment to speculate here in this thread on your initial thoughts and plans for the game. Will you settle in place? Will you try to found a religion? What are your plans for getting the most from the UA and UU? What Victory Condition will you be aiming for?

The suggested VC is Science!

Spoiler for opening screen shot :
civ5ss-korea-cdg29-t000.jpeg

Spoiler for UA and UU :
Scholars of the Jade Hall: +2 science for all specialists and for all Great Person tile improvements. Receive a tech boost each time a scientific building or Wonder is built in the Korean capital.

You can train the Hwach’a and Turtle Ship.

The Hwatch’a replaces the Trebuchet but has ranged combat attack strength of 26 as compared to 14. The Hwatch’a is slightly weaker on the defense (11 vs. 12) and does not get a bonus when attacking cities.

The Turtle Ship replaces the Caravel and has a combat strength of 36 as compared to 20. The Turtle Ship may not enter deep ocean hexes outside of the city borders, and does not get the Caravel promotions (+1 sight, withdraw before melee).

Spoiler for map type and settings :
Standard size, standard speed, standard number of civs and CS. Map type is Small Continents Plus (similar to Small Continents, but with extra scripting). All VC are enabled, and map was not edited.

Your opponents are hand selected, so please be sure to comment once you figure out the theme.

Oh, good, I was hoping a new game would be up for the weekend. That land though, ouch.

Looks like more coast down south so I'll move the warrior there to see what's up. If this were not deity I'd move the settler to the incense or elephant since I could most likely get Hanging Gardens anyway. But a garden will be helpful so I'll settle in place.

That doesn't look too promising so I'm all for it and I'm likely moving somewhere, anywhere - I can work without food but not without hammers.

This is going to be one weird game as I'm doing things I usually don't - some by choice some by necessity either way I'm screwed which is welcomed but I still can't stand the map script. Gief at least two coastal tiles everywhere with these crappy islands/continents.

Spoiler :

Didn't settle on site or even coastal but on a hill in the middle of the island, went Tradition for whichever reason, haven't started a war.
Everything is ages away from what is considered normal so on t100 I'm still several turns away from NC as well as from CS, no external TRs yet, nothing resembling an army only few Archers and so on - haven't even met all the civs yet.

I have shared a map that is a good bit duller than I thought. Apologies for that!
Spoiler for why map is dull :
The start is isolated from any AI.

Based on the severe lack of results it's actually not too late to switch back to plan A if you so wish. My 100 turns are not wasted and others seem to be even less into this.

Screenshot and save file have been replaced with the ones I meant to use in the first place! Still kinda of light on hammers, but maybe a few more forests for chopping. Same map as before, but a more interesting starting position.

I'm playing it. And may actually win my first Deity game! Couldn't finish because I went away for the weekend but I'll finish when I get back.

Spoiler :
And yep the isolated start is part of he reason I'm doing well. And Korea.

No one has attacked me and I was able to use diplomacy to keep the rest of the world at war. It's been a fun game. I like isolated starts sometimes. It's a different kind of game.

Edit. Noooooo. Well I'll post and comment on my original hopeful victory anyway before the gods used their magic to create a parallel universe.

@raider980, I am actually fond of isolated starts myself. Let’s me focus on empire building, and the stupid AIs can war to themselves. Keep plugging away, Deity game is Deity game, so good luck! My own SV win was actually quite narrow, and I very much enjoyed the game.

Woohoo, won my first Deity game! Beat Babylon by two spaceship parts. I don't think it was that close though, I don't think he had the tech to build the last two.

Congratulations! What turn was that? Do you have a screen shot? I really appreciate seeing where people picked to settle.

Attached is my own SV on the map you played. T307, so not fast at all.

Yep, here's my screenshot. My victory was T305. I think we built our cities in the exact same spots but you have one more up north.

Spoiler :
Most interesting is the mini map showing how the AI did - very different between our games. In both, Arabia did very well and Germany too. But in yours China was wiped out while in mine they did fairly well and expanded east. In yours Assyria beat down Babylon while in mine it was the opposite. That's why I think the 8 game series will be so interesting. Glad you came up with it because playing these shared games I have noticed how the AI performs so differently between various games even starting with the same save file.

Is that the new save game? I started this game a while back but
Spoiler :

I was on a continent with Arabia, Russia and Assyria.

Is that the new save game?
No, as @raider980 and I played the file that I posted by mistake, the isolated start. You are playing the map that I meant to share in the first place. You should be able to recognize the continent we are on, as it is the same map. In our game, you started in the “green” territory to our west.

Oh, I see now :) I hope I have the time to finish this game, and then make a write-up for it, so far things are pretty interesting.
Spoiler :

I managed to take a capital having the single starting warrior (upgraded to spearmen) and just two scouts as an army. As Assyria was gunning for Mecca I just hanged around and DoW'ed Arabia at the right time. Funny, even though I snatched Assyria's capture they became friends with me and that friendship lasted almost until Ideology. I am now at T214, 4 turns away from starting research for plastics (which I will not bulb) and having some issues with low population. This is mainly because I settled an extra city and had been in unhappiness for a long time. This affected me because I couldn't work all scientists slots and now I am a little low on scientists. I may switch and go for a domination victory, I will probably take the Assyrian capital since they could become a threat later on, and see from there.

Here is a screnshot of the current situations

...Funny, even though I snatched [snip]'s capture they became friends with me and that friendship lasted almost until Ideology.
It is funny, since snipping a cap is the kind of thing that would really piss off a human being, but the AI sees as cooperative behavior (i.e., we are both at war with the same civ).

Your game looks really good, but what is up with where you put Daegu? That spot looks really meager to me.

Yes Daegu was the reason for the slowdown. That was a combination of poor exploration (I thought that I could go SE of Jeonju but that spot was occupied by a city state) and being out of hand. I ended up with an extra settler and planted the city there. It has only the two fish and the cow for food but with a help of a cargo ship it became almost decent.

I ended up winning by science at T300. It could have been better if I had timed the GS better (had an extra 3 at the end) and also watched my money. I tanked a lot of money into upgrading frigates and in the end I had to waste 10 turns just to build the last spaceship. I also captured some capitals, but I needed 3 more and the SV was faster to reach. But this is what happens when a clear plan is not followed :)

So Korea is the civ I play with the most so starting on this game to try for my first Deity win. Plan to post in progress here every 100 turns or so how things go. I plan to settle in place as moving the first settler seems like almost always a bad idea as you end up losing to many turns. For the UU I have found it is mostly useful for defense especially if I am on an island. Plan to get the most from the unique ability by building all kinds of sites from great people along with libraries early. Hope to get a religion but at this level not sure it will be possible. We shall see...

Edit: going to need to check the budget and pick up the two DLC I do not have it seems. Though not sure how the scrambled nations are used in this one..
