The Honor and Tradition openers won't earn you as much culture as your final policy will cost, in most games, so you need to be picking them for other reasons - planning to take more in that tree or, for Trad, the border expansion and it's considerable value is sufficient.
I'm not playing for achievements, so I don't want to do the tally, but I had between 10 and 15 Jaguars, and none of them died. I only lost one unit all game I think, an upgraded Archer to Gatling Gun that was killed in the last few turns. I won in the Modern Era. I self-built 3 cities and they all had FG before NC. NC came around T100 IIRC
I think that is exactly correct. Simplifying the UA to “two free polices, but early” is not far off the mark. If I think about it that way, putting two picks into Patronage like @consentient did is probably the best play for Aztec. Consulates is very strong, but only if you get it early. So that fits!
The other thing about the Aztecs is how quickly you can get through the first tree. So warlike Tradition or Honor enables either crazy growth (Free aqueducts) or loadsamoney (Honor finisher). When I was killing the UUs of the closest neighbours, that gold SOON adds up to a nice amount, enough for rush-buying reinforcements, workers, whatever you need...
Patronage is great but I went the left side first as I wanted the big boost to Science. I had done so many quests for the CS that I didn't need Consulates.
Called it quits on turn 235. Game went to hell a little after 200.
Settled the hill next to Kilamanjaro then popped a culture ruin, so opened tradition turn 3. Grabbed the honor opener a few turns later , then back to tradition. Boudicca attacked early but i had plenty of Jags and held her off. She attacked again later a few turns before I would have, but I was ready and ended up taking the capital. Figured i would wait for dynamite before going into Inca lands and got it around 175 I think. Took me longer to grab the capital than I expected, but got it with little loss on my end.
Plan was then to move into America so turn 200 I DOW'd and went in. This resulted in a mass denouncement by the world. I had been struggling with happiness the whole game. Not sure what I could do. Every city had all happiness buildings and Mosques, plus pagodas in Boudicca's old cities. With the world hating me now couldn't keep up trade deals for luxuries so happiness tanked. The Iroquois were runaways on the north half of the map, so I went Autocracy to try and offset ideology unhappiness, but that didn't help and I found myself as bad as -21 at one point.
I moved a diplomat to their capital and switched to freedom (had no autocracy policies yet) and that helped a bit, but then Pedro beat me to Statue of Liberty by 1 turn and I had to peace out with America as weird city placement caused me problems getting artillery into place to take Boston (or Philly) without being in range of the other city. Only needed 1 of the 2 to get to Washington. I had a smaller force on the other side keeping them occupied, but it wasn't enough to go in.
Only hope would have been to switch to science, but the iroquois were so far ahead on techs that I would have had to nuke the world to have a chance so rather than waste another 100 turns, called it a day.
Turn 355 Science Victory. Tried my hardest to go Dom but Shaka spread like the plague this time and was just too strong.
Similar start to last game. Settled the hill, opened Trad, then honor and back to trad. Filled it before going diplomacy this time, figuring I'd need the city states to help. Tried to go early on Boudicca, but she spammed almost endless units, so I couldn't get to far into her lands. By the time I cleared her out and went into Inca territory, Shaka had wiped the Iroquois and Songhai off the map and was already going after Pedro. I had what I thought was a decent military but his was still 4x as big. Went autocracy to stay friendly with him and finished of the Incas.
Thought I could go for a diplo victory, but they repealed world order autocracy while I was trying to get no nukes passed (shake and washington were tossing them around way to freely) and came up short, so just threw up all defenses and held back. Shaka had launched 4 already but i was ahead in techs and I didnt think he had all he needed to launch the final parts.
Still need to learn how to war better, but getting more comfortable on deity, so that's a plus
For learning to war better/faster, I'd highly recommend Acken's Chu-Ko-Nu video. It's pretty easy to eliminate a neighbor early once you know the right build order and a few key techniques.
You did better than I could @penguin74, I have tried a few times. Hiawatha gets to CV (this time, T322) before I can launch.
Probably I should try the lite version. OTOH, the last game I had a very enjoyable time doing a Liberty/Tradition hybrid. I had six expos in pretty a regular hexagon pattern, all on lakes or rivers. Rationalism was only delayed by one SP pick, but I still got the Liberty GE closer for Porcelain Tower.
I started back tracking past games while waiting for the Japan one and pretty much screwed up everything. Lovely game.
SIP and DoWed Boudicca on T8 but never managed to steal more than one lousy Worker so I made peace by the time I had to have TRs for money. I got the Liberty Settler out fairly quickly and settled to the West and bought Kiev's Gems on 3rd ring, The number of barbs was beyond basic arithmetic which would've been fine but none of CSs seemed too bothered with them so only 2 quests for clearing camps. Also the number of units needed to keep Workers safe was on the verge of pop cap and huge drain to my economy which resulted selling luxes more than I would've liked especially when I needed to pay the Celts & US to go somewhere else with their war machine and Zulu 3 times and still Boudicca DoWed T74.
5C city Liberty, 3rd by the Whales which can't be connected in a lake, 4th city by Washington which resulted a bit too long road and 5th way up North as Boudicca took the Marble while I was walking - lots of useless food but especially with 4th & 5th lacking hammers. Liberty finished T59 and while waiting for Libs I even managed Pyramids T71. No chance of a religion and the Celts had a crappy one so I didn't even bother with shrines. T96 Oracle by the 2nd city, T97 NC, T104 Machinery which was nice but even better if I had enough money for upgrades, T105 Spy which I forgot for ~turns after which it didn't catch even a frozen halibut so I moved it to Rio's sunshine and still 36 turns to get anything, huah and T113 Education
The Celtic war was a glorious example of glorious incompetence, bad terrain and bad luck so I took Edinburgh first but only on ~T130 and it was totally useless. The city by the Marble was equally useless but needed for the road. Apparently Boudicca built nothing but units and mostly used her faith for the same purpose. After this I was about to go to Brazil which was bit hancapped by Shaka's tickling but since I by accident had clicked DoF last time he asked I thought I'll Cusco meanwhile so obviously Pacha allied with the closest CS right away which blocked my path and the map had a visual bug showing mountains as hills which blocked my other path & shooting points from 3 tiles away. Cusco itself was easy T173 but by that time my units were stuck far away from Brazil so I turned my eye on Washington but obviously he made peace with Hiawatha and allied with Kiev which I needed for my road so I had to wait for my next Patronage Policy to have enough cash to ally Kiev and get some Arties online before DoWing. Brazil can wait, Shaka made a coup in my Belgrade and doesn't have enough places to go war so he's on my borders again, Askia doesn't like me but Hiawatha luckily isn't visibly hating me.
The only good thing in past ~150 turns has been WF which I won on T169 but wasted hammers as I put up double the next one did. Those hammers would've been better used somewhere else.
I'm only few techs behind Hiawatha the leader but only one going for Arties so there's a possibility that if this goes on for too long those will be useless against GWBs but a bit late for drastic changes anyway. The whole game has been a mess.
Glad to see you playing this map @Grendeldef! I cannot remember if I tried the lite version or not, but after taking all the land East of me, I settled for SV on T339. Victory SS attached.
I just finished the game on T244 disliking & liking every turn of the last 50 turns. Instead of going for fast VC as that was already screwed up in the early stages I was on the other hand preparing for air war while fighting with ground troops so I didn't bulb my CSs nor GAs for GAges so in the end I was only 2 techs ahead of Hiawatha. Making war with equal units for a change was fun for a change.
