In line with the sea monsters, I also propose a floating island
Every few turns it drifts one square in a semirandom direction, with a moderate preference for the same general direction as the previous move (i.e. if it was drifting westerly, it could go NW, W, or SW, with a small chance of N or S) until it hits something, after which a new vector takes hold.
As a landform it resembles a Forested Hill.
It can temporarily merge with the mainland, but can never come within two squares of a city centre.
If it enters cultural borders, any units on the island are teleported away under the usual rules.
If someone chops the Forest, it eventually regrows. Any improvements made meanwhile are lost when this happens. If someone has built a city on it, the city is razed when this happens. Units within the city survive but are injured.
At rare intervals, it temporarily submerges. Any units on it are drowned when this happens. If someone has built a city on it, the city is razed when this happens.
As a programming exercise, this presents interesting challenges as all the various map relationships (Settlers, War, Routes) would have to be recalculated on every move.
