Are there good mechanisms for spreading religious influence indirectly (not through apostles/missionaries)?
Playing Deity as India, I had an almost peaceful game - one minor border skirmish with France. I managed to convert most of the world to Hinduism and even maintained an alliance and defensive pact with Pedro after conversion. But Greece had 3 cities, and the two main cities were surrounded at all times with 2-3 layers of crossbowman and knights. I didn't see any way of converting those two cities in any reasonable time frame After a couple of dozen turns of all other cities being converted, only 1 out of 13 citizens were Hindi, even after sending half a dozen trade routes their way (I couldn't think of anything else).
I eventually gave up, had Greece force me into declaring war, and escorted my apostle to the city gates via mechanical infantry.
The extra turns weren't a total loss - I got to figure out national parks (built 3) and seaside resorts. But it would have been nice not to declare war. Was there anything else I could have tried?
