Complex Achievements

For some of the really weird achievements, it can be hard to figure out what you're ACTUALLY supposed to do. For example, I just found out the hard way that Japan's special 'Meiji Restoration' achievement DOESN'T work if one of the 6 districts is the City Center. Bah. Well, with that in mind, I wanna ask if anyone knows the exact requirements for 'Man in the Moon'. By the description, you'd just need to have obtained (and expended) Newton and Darwin, and then have at least one captured ex-Egyptian city in your empire when you launch the final bit of the Mars-expedition. But it could ALSO mean that you have to launch that last bit (or, for that matter, the WHOLE THING), from a Spaceport ATTACHED to that Egyptian city.

So... does anyone know which it is? I'm about at the point where I'm getting ready to start my space-project, but I haven't managed to capture an Egyptian city yet. If I need to do so, then build a Spaceport, then produce the final piece there, it'll slow me down enough to make me worried about the AI's...

Oh, and any other interesting musings, questions, or revelations about Achievements are welcome too. Doesn't seem like there's a general Achievement strategy thread yet!

What district have you built for "Meiji Restoration"?
I did try like 4-5 combinations, but no achievement so far. I didn't use city center as one of adjacent district.
It looks like one of districts doesn't count for this achievement. Maybe aqueduct or neighborhood (will test it soon)?

Does it say specialty district? The city center and the aqueduct are not specialty districts. They're the ones you build buildings of a particular type in, industrial, entertainment, etc.

The achievement just says 'districts'. Nothing else. But yes, I suspect it's the Neighborhood that doesn't count. I managed to try a combination that didn't involve the City Center, but DID involve a Neighborhood, before I ran out of time - and no joy. No idea about Aqueducts, I didn't try with those, but I'd be surprised if it worked...

I doubt either would count. I'd be a bit leery of Aerodromes and Spaceports as well.

Campus, Encampment, Holy Site, Commercial Hub, Entertainment Complex, Theater Square, Industrial Zone and probably Harbor should work. You'll need 7 of the 8.
Though it doesn't say they have to be unique (or from a single city), so try three cities converging on a hub where the third tile out is shared between all three of them. The capital builds a district there, and then each city just builds two more. Should be viable really early on. And any industrial districts in that mess will provide ridiculous overlapping bonuses once electronics factories kick in.

Oh! And just for the record, I got Man in the Moon no problem, despite never even building a Spaceport at my newly-conquered Egyptian city. So that one's easy enough.

Still no luck with "Meiji Restoration" for me.
In last game I had campus surrounded by other 2 campuses, 2 commercial hubs and 2 industrial zones.
I did play on quick speed, so maybe it is available only on standard speed? or standard map size?

What is this achievement supposed to refer to ? I just don't get the point between the moon, Darwin, Newton, and an Egyptian city.

Lyrics from R.E.M's song "Man On The Moon."
Specifically, the verse: "Moses went walking with the staff of wood (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)/Newton got beaned by the apple good (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)/Egypt was troubled by the horrible asp (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)/Mister Charles Darwin had the gall to ask (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)"

Yeah, I didn't get it at first either. :P The only REM song I'd recognize the lyrics to offhand is 'Losing my Religion'. Fortunately, my girlfriend's a big REM-fan, and was able to enlighten me. (It fits even better if, like with me, the Egyptian city you conquer is the last/only one there is, since you then get Cleopatra's defeat-quote... about surrendering herself to the embrace of the Asp.)

Well, I just built - as Japan - an Industrial Zone, surrounded by Campus, Encampment, Holy Site, Commercial Hub, Entertainment Complex and Theater Square. All built by the same city. No achievement. So unless there's a hidden requirement in terms of map-size, starting-period or whatnot (I did it in an Information Era Start, Duel-sized map) it looks like it's bugged...

I concur - bugged. Tried it with aqueduct, neighborhood and encampments as the 7th district (no city centre). 0.1% of people have it, but they may have edited their achievement file to get it.

p.s. Also tried filing up all 7 districts with all three buildings each. No good.

It looks like center district need to be placed as the last one.
I got achievement with below districts setup. Encampment went to the center.

Oh. Well, at least now we know! Nice thinking, Seti. >_> Of course, now I wonder if - doing it THAT way - it might not work using the City Center, Housing, Aquaduct and so on in the surrounding hexes. :p

Nice work Seti_PL - I replicated your result and it worked fine (try a later start for 1-turn districts). Thanks!

Just in casy anybody is still curious about this: You do not have to obtain and expend Newton and Darwin yourself, it's sufficient when someone else does (I got Darwin, but Mansa Musa took Newton). You also don't have to conquer an egyptian city, I got it when I loyalty flipped it late in the game. And that city doesn't have to contribute at all to the space race. I always love it when a complex achievement pops without me actually aiming for it.

I think you may need 6 different districts.
Maybe even districts of one city.

I got the achievement a year ago with this config, and I'm quite sure the GP did not go in last. Three cities contributed districts, and all are technically specialty districts.

It's quite possible with all the NFP shenanaigans regarding districts that this no longer works as it did for me a year ago.
