Philosophical and Creative are great boosters for science, because of the double speed on both Libraries and Universities. With that in mind, the Koreans give the Saewoon (University) which boasts a 35% bonus to science instead. Strong(er) but not great by any means. And the unique unit is of dubious strength. Bronze Working is available at 4000 BC, though.

Arabia makes for a good snowball, double speed on Madrassa and easy Great Person generation, as the Madrassa has a whopping 4 specialist slots. Egypt for a similar reason, and both allow for maybe founding a religion early, allowing for good use of the possible Great Prophet. Weaker on higher difficulties?

Romans would be great, but that's 90% because of Praetorians, not the Forum. Forum is actually stronger on non-Philosophical leaders because the returns are diminishing, unless you're going for a gimmick strategy. A 25% boost is about 15% more Great People over the course of the game. This drops to 13% with Parthenon, 10% with Pacifism/Philosophical, and 7% with both. Oh, and there's National Epic, too.

Yeah... Prats. Not really synergy - they’re just kind of good for everyone. :mischief:

The Saewoon would be good synergy though. Universities are so expensive otherwise. All the GSs would help bulb the Edu/Lib bulbing path to get there. And the Hwacha - always gives me trouble if they’re near me. I wouldn’t mind having that. Better than the Phalanx for sure. And better starting tech in Mining. Mysticism would be a wash though.

I'm going to make an oddball suggestion and suggest Babylon. Wheel and Agriculture puts you very close to Pottery and Writing, albeit at the cost of being far away from Bronze Working, and no Fishing means that Engineering bulbs are on the table. CRE Gardens would be an effective 40:hammers: building unlocked at Construction that gives +1:) and +2:health:, not amazing but definitely not useless if you're growing cities to run a ton of specialists, and at that cost you can easily sink 9:hammers: into it and 2-pop whip it with massive overflow. And the UU, the Bowman, gives you very solid early game barb defence if you don't have metal or horses nearby. Hunting -> Archery is quite a detour, but with Pottery available immediately it hopefully won't be that bad.

Ah good call @AcaMetis - I was also thinking any civ with that starting tech combo for quick Pottery/Writing access. Forgot about Bab’s Garden though, not bad. Don’t think I ever see that mentioned in posts here. All 3 colosseum UBs seem pretty decent.

For units, of course AH is one tech away also. But with synergy comes tradeoffs, as it should.

Lots of other civs with that tech combo: French, Sumerians, Ottomans, Egyptians..

Out of that, Egypt would also give stellar early unit to cover lack of early metals, but weaker UB I’d say. GA points from French UB would actually be desirable for cultural victories here (if it’s going later into the game, something I read is now a thing in K-Mod games).

For some reason i was just thinking, actually Alex is the underrated Greek.
    Most really like Peri already.
Alex can do good Axe rushes imo (without thinking about chariot protection too much, and HAs are rarely around so early).
While starting techs are a problem with Greece, but you can at least always get your food tech first, he can recover with PHI later?
