I never have had to reinstall the OS or format the hard drive. First, I don't know how, and second, I have no way of backing up my files. My dad (stupidly) bought my computer WITHOUT a CD burner, so I've had about 20 months of files on my comp that haven't been backed up.
I also keep my computer pretty clean - the worst spyware I have had is tracking cookies, and thanks to Spyware Blaster and Tracks Eraser, I never any bad cookies for long. I also frequently uninstall unused programs on my comp and never have been infected with a virus. I also use IE for limited purposes and avoid most spyware that comes thorugh.
