Computer Questions Not Worth Their Own Thread II

Doesnt matter because I just now got home from work, and it fizzled. the entire laptop won't even turn on and I'm not seeing the indicator light turn on when I plug it in. So yeah. It's dead now. :(

Probably a dodgy advert on the page you were looking at. I doubt it's a virus on your computer. Does it happen on other pages?

Try disabling extensions, might be a dodgy extension. Also have you searched for "updownnig" to see if anyone else has had this problem and how they solved it?

These are my system specs. Is this machine something I can over-clock?

This machine is all I have, a walmart pos gifted to me for x-mas (and surprise surprise, xmas day was the last day of the return policy. So I never had a damn chance at getting a better machine. I got really screwed over, IMO. ), and I don't have enough green capitalist slime (money) to afford a new, better rig.
Spoiler Condensed DxDiag info; dunno if I need to redact anything else, or if I even need to redact anything at all, thus the spoilers. :

AMD E-series? Unlikely. Particularly in a laptop, where thermal budgeting is important. You don't want to OC that unless you're willing to risk blowing it. Not that it would help, anyway. Sorry.

There's probably some extra thermal room on that chip, there's no turbo and the 1.65 GHz part has the same TDP.

That being said, it doesn't look like there's any useful Windows software for overclocking Brazos chips, and you'd have to check but I suspect your BIOS doesn't let you change the clock.

You should update to Windows 8.1 though.

It's certainly something fishy, whether a virus or something else. In addition to Mise's suggestions, or if they don't fix it, try running Malwarebytes. It's a free and well-reputed on-demand anti-virus scanner. Not every anti-virus program catches everything, so it might catch if even though Norton didn't.

These are my system specs. Is this machine something I can over-clock?

It looks highly unlikely that you'll be able to overclock the processor. I found a thread on overclockers.net about that CPU, and if they say it's all but hopeless, it is. It might be possible to slightly overclock the graphics card (five to seven years ago, RivaTuner would be the tool for the job, but there's probably something more suitable for modern graphics chips these days), but it's never going to be a champion of a graphics card. Enough for Civ3, possibly Civ4, but probably not going to be adequate for Civ5.

(BTW I don't see anything you need to redact, you already got the machine name and everything else is hardware or drivers)

Yikes. Was afraid of that. :undecide: Thanks. I did try sims 3 on it when I first got it, but it was too slow to be worth it. If Win 8 had better support for all of Sims 2's ep's, and ran it fine sans compatibility, would this machine handle the load?

And kinda related, does windows 8 run slower than 7? Because if I do update to 8.1, it would be only temporary because I plan a full downgrade to 7 regardless of everyone's objections, and was wondering if the downgrade would let the machine run at least slightly better.

And speaking of updating to 8.1, that's free by default, isn't it?

(BTW I don't see anything you need to redact, you already got the machine name and everything else is hardware or drivers)
Cool, good to know. Thanks. :)

Windows 7 and 8 are in the same weight class, expect a barely noticable performance drop after the downgrade.
Yes, the Windows 8.1 update is free.

Can you mod civ v on a mac? By mod I mean make your on mod, not download somebody else's and install it.

Then how do I go about it? Keep in mind I have it on Steam.

Pretty sure the SDK and all is only for the windows version

Those instructions are for downloading and installing somebody else's mod, not making one on your own.

Started about 3 weeks ago. It's the same with Chrome / FireFox / IE and every video website. I've tried turning HTML5 on/off through Youtube. It gets marginally better on the lowest quality setting on Youtube.

It happened both on Windows 8 and 8.1 and all video players worked perfectly last month. It doesn't happen to all videos either, some channels on YouTube play perfectly. If I download the YouTube video, it plays fine on my hard drive.

halp pls

Google fails me again. How do I condense long folder names that have spaces in them into a format usable by command prompt when tyoing out the file paths?
