Computer Questions Not Worth Their Own Thread

Something like that happened to my kitchen LCD TV. A quarter of the screen was covered in black and yellowish blobs, but now it's mostly gone, just in the corners at the bottom now.

Strange, people's seem to recover while mine just got worse. I suppose it depends on the severity of the accident which caused the damage?

What would happen if you put an old OS (windows 98 or so) on a newer computer? (This is also assuming there's proper drivers available.)

Besides the OS not being able to use some of the resources (RAM, and I dont know how well Win98 plays with multicore cpu's), nothing?

Would it be extremely fast, though?

Compared to a computer designed for that OS.

Why is it that my flash drive survived both dropping 6 feet to a concrete floor (I was on a ladder and had it around my neck and the string broke) AND going through the washing machine? Not even a single corrupted file!
When I spill orange juice on a remote control I disassemble it and wash it in the sink with the dishes. Water can do damage (depending on the components and the way you wet it) but water damaging electronics is more common with much older or higher voltage equipment.

WRT the drop, chips can handle more than that.

Solid-state FTW!!!!!
I looked this up. FTW stands for "for the win". I've never seen it mean that before...I was about to PM you!

I once went on a week long bender of trying to achieve the same thing as you. I installed w3.1 on a p3 (IIRC). I was willing to overlook the fact that I would have trouble doing a great deal more than playing dos games but without a video driver, it wasn't too pleasant. I also found out how much I rely on a scroll wheel.

I decided to move up to w95a. This was more comfortable. It was also fast like w3.1. I learned at that point that you can only gain speed by going back so far as there are fundamental limits elsewhere.

Shortly after (same week) that I convinced myself that w98 wasn't that different and was worth the extra functionality. I was using it as my main msos at the time anyway.

It wasn't long after that, that I decided to make the jump to XP, and upgraded my system too. Talk about going backwards ;)

On a new computer (64 bit architecture) can a device on a (standard) PCI bus directly address RAM (the lower gigs 3.some odd gigs of it, at least), or must it go through some intermediate hardware?

Why won't atitool or the catalyst control center let me manually change any settings on my new card? The fan speed is what I want specifically. Also gpuz is showing the core clock and memory clock as only a fraction of what they should be, 160mhz when it should be 575mhz.

The card is in its power saving mode. It reduces its speeds to save some electricity.
As for changing them, is this a mobile card or a desktop card?

Hmm, its been a while since ive had an ATi card, but I think in the Control Center you need to use advanced mode.

You have to click the key icon to unlock Overdrive, then check the box for manual fan control

And make sure your Control Center is up to date. Manual fan control was introduced in Catalyst 8.10 I think

I don't know if this helps any, as it's for databases and it's early in the morning so everything's garbage to me :p

Thanks. Just don't like it being set just on 50%, I like the dynamic range atitool gives but it won't work for some reason. Oh well, the card runs pretty cool on 50% anyway, don't want to risk burning out the fan.
