I decided to create a concept image for a revised armour unit, to use as a replacement for the current seige tank model.

Currently it needs a bit of refinement in terms of detail, and I'm considering changing the missle turret into a smooth bore cannon.

Anyways let me know what you think, if you like it ill get right down to refining the concept and then modeling it for use ingame.

Any constructive criticism is more then welcome.

I've added this image that replaces the missle launcher with a smoothbore cannon. Let me know what you think

Does this mean you have former experience in creating 3D models and/or textures with a 3D graphics program?

Yes and no,

I have a diploma in digital arts but that mainly deals with web development and static artwork. During that course I was given a cursory introduction to 3d art development tools and as such I know my way around them but I'm not a master by any means. However, due to the low poly enviorment that civ uses I think that my skill level is more the adaquet to produce decent content for the game.

Because most units hear are based on existing ones, you might want to use this here as base for your second concept art.

So from this I gather that it is impossible to import new models into the civ engine?, or do you mean that the unit art in planetfall is primarly based on real world units?

EDIT "Nm found coyote's tuts" all it should take is abit of tweaking and some time, ill let you guys know how things progress

ps thx for the unit link.

No, i don't mean anything of this.
Some of the models used in some of the mods are from other games, this is not a problem.
I just wanted to say, that most times other models are re-used, because it's easier than to build a new one from scratch, and that this unit seems to be similar to the one you want to create.

I'm thinking it may already be detailed enough in fact. Usually a lot of polygons can be saved and details represented by a good texture.

Actually both versions would be useful. Planetfall allows units to change graphics upon choosing special abilities. So for instance the missile launcher could be used for AAA Tracking, and the cannon for the unpromoted unit.

Actually I was thinking along the same lines as you in that unit upgrades could cause small graphical changes to the model, I know that such a concept was used in the Afterworld mod, however at this point I think that I will just model and animate one of the concepts as I have alot to learn about making gfx for Civ.

As long as you make the cannon/rocket launcher separate from the main tank body you're golden. Shouldn't present much of a problem to attach those.

Actually that would make things alot easier for creating the model, if by what you said you mean that I should create two separate models one being the turret and the other being the chassis.

However, in terms of animating I'm not sure how that would work, seeing as the base model would have to be animated as well at the turret model, and it seems that two separate animations might cause problems, with one trying to override the other perhaps. TBH I'm not really sure how that would work, I've been looking for tutorials and amassing reference material so that when I start modeling I can insure that I have accounted for all of the details that are needed for civ content. Any info you could pass along would be quite helpful.

That's what I meant.

That's completely outside my field of expertise. You better ask a animation guru in the Civ4 units forum.

There isn't really one.
Deliverator and The_Coyote are not often online atm, and besides them, only Snafusmith does custom animations (IIRC).

But in this thread in the opening post is a tutorial how to craft an standard civ animation on a unit without animation.

Well this thread and the others have been a great help so far. Unfortunatly, Im starting a new job next week and wont have much time to get things going for the time being :(. Anyways I should be getting back on this project eventually as Id deffinatly like to see it completed, but if anyone wants to use the concept art to create the model in the time being by all means go for it. Otherwise thanks for the help guys.
