Concerning the disabled "Search function"

I've been considering posting this thread for a while now, and I never did it because I actually have no solutions to the "search off" problem. Anyway, I'd like to make a small consideration, and ask one thing or two, that may help a little...

The consideration in question is that I, unlike some, used the search A LOT, and when it goes off, I feel it instantly. Considering the sort of discussion I get into, and how careful I am with what I post, being unable to retrive the threads is quite sad, as it's not uncommon that I want to repeat the post in another forum/discussion (and as I consider CFC home, I usually have my best stuff here).

I can appreciate the need of the forum search being turned off, specially considering the new "conquests" traffic - and I am not complaining about it - but I do think it penalizes posters who actually make an effort to create such posts that are worthwhile finding again later.

That is what I wanted to say. Now, what I wanted to ask, as I am not a computer expert, but just a casual user, is... is there any software that allows me to do a search of a forum database, without being depending of the forum's search function? Something that is not easy or practical (as otherwise it would have shown up here by now), but that can work if onw is willing to learn, sucking my system instead of CFC so I am never deprived of it?

I don't think there is such thing, but anyway, worth asking...

If that is not possible, as I expect, I'd like to suggest alternatives that, while not solving the problem, might help users with the same issues as me:

1 - That the users CP allows some sort of "favorites" function, that allows one to save his/her preferred threads, so he/she can easily reach them again.

2 - A function that allows you to recieve an e-mail with the thread address without someone having to post in it... something automatic, a button that send the nlink as you press it. It's that I have tried to save the e-mails I recieved notifying replys in a special folder in my computer to try solving the "search"issue, but every now and again, things like virus, or a problem that demands a format of my HD, or any other contingence, makes me loose what I had stored.

This would be a great way to get back lost links for my preferred threads, as I would not have to depend on someone else posting (specially if it's a very old, and already dead, thread). So, I could harvest for them when the function is on, and, in principle, I'd not need searching again.

So, this is what I had to say. Now, you, great powers that be on CFC, what do you have to say? Is any of these alternatives viable?

Anyway, as i always say when I address the Staff, great site, folks. :goodjob:

Regards :).

Damn lawyers, always wanting a useful index or search function, oh, wait, never mind.

You could try seaching within the forums.civfanatics.com domain on Google.

For example, if you want to search for "Great Library", in the search field, put "Great Library site:forums.civfanatics.com". It's not that great but better than nothing.

1 - That the users CP allows some sort of "favorites" function, that allows one to save his/her preferred threads, so he/she can easily reach them again.
You can already do that, by subscribing to threads. Just click the "Receive update to this thread" link at the bottom of the thread. You can view all your subscribed threads by clicking that View All Subcribed Thread link in your User CP: http://forums.civfanatics.com/member2.php?s=&action=viewsubscription

vB 3.0 will allow you to add threads to the subcription list w/o receiving email notifications. The improved subscription features also allows you to create folders so you can sort the subcribed threads by topic if you wanted to.

BTW, we probably will have another forum server upgrade in the future. No estimate on when this will happen though... Telefragged is looking into it...

Unfortunately, Google doesn't index all the threads here

Idea: why not make the "search" avalible to people with more posts (i.e. >1500, >2000, >3000), like the custom avatar limit?

maybe it would be possible if the threads would be put monthly or so to an archive which could be downloaded?

Why not download threads that you think you'll view later?

Too many threads

Yeah, like spammers are going to use a tool to help cut down on spam.

I don't think it could really be kept secret, and don't underestimate the power of spammers... :scan:

Can we have set limited times when the search function is enabled? It's sadly becoming impossible to use the forum anymore. :(

Can it be disabled only for some forums? Say, leaving it eanabled only for the Civ sections, or perhaps only some critical forums therein?

I agree with Lefty, especially the last part, especially if "critical forums" means Off Topic ;)

But what about "One search per hour/10-15minutes allowed"?

The limited tiem search is a great idea! I only ever need to do one on my initial visit anyway. It would be nice. The way I normally used to keep up with the Forum was to go back and review my previous posts. That's now not possible and so I have to try and hope to find a thread I've posted on, and then find my post to, so I can read further replies. This is a hopeless gesture on the Civ III main forum and Off Topic.
