conquering cities

sometimes when I conquer a city, I receive plundered gold and technology, but the city disappears; sometimes it remains , listed as a friendly city, I don't understand: why? any insight?

Size 1 cities, especially those without city walls, are usually destroyed when captured.

A successful attack on a city without city walls reduces population by one. So if the city has a large number of defenders it can happen that you wipe out the entire city, as mackerel says.
