I'm hoping to start a thread with a bunch of new, good ideas that apply especially to Conquests.

A couple things I've noted in my minimal play...

Contacts:
-Try to get/keep a unit near the seashore, so you can see enemy curraghs going by, even if you've not had a chance/opportunity to build your own. You can get contact that way.
- Want to know what civs your AI foes have contact with? Establish an embassy, go into diplo negotiations, and check who they would ally with you against. That's your list of shared contacts. This can be very helpful for paying non-monopoly prices and selling at monopoly prices.

The Philosophy bee-line:
I tried going straight to Philosophy with max research with great success on Emperor last night. A free tech (pick the most expensive, of course) is very VERY nice. Even better would be somehow getting Code of Laws before Philo to get Republic for free. This is barely tested, but it's worth considering.

Workers
I noticed the AI building a lot of roads outside of its city territories in my game. Improved? Silly? Good/bad? I dunno, but keep an eye out for stealing a spot (possibly with pretty tight placement) to take advantage of the work an AI civ has done for you already.

Anybody else have things to contribute?

I played WWII last night as american. I used to play in emperor. But i tried regent since I just wanted to see how the game folds out. One quick observation is that if you follow history book, you probably have a very good chance of winning in regent level(as american). But in higher level you probably need to have different thinkings.

Mayans unique unit
I thought that the javelin thrower could only enslave the other civ opp. Well, I had barbs attk me and I ended up enslaving 2 barbs.
2 free workers real early. They work twice as slow but hey.

Think of you main goal for the game or for the moment and research techs that comply with it. For example;

I want to make this a builder's game... so I will start to research Pottery or Masonry to get Granaries to get higher pops and more settlers and Masonry to get a crack on the Pyramids.

or

I want to go straight and attack the nearest city I find... well then start on Warrior code or the wheel. It also depends on your UU, I would go for a fast attack with Sumer and thier Enkidu Warriors.

Haven't played a whole epic game yet. Brief glipses show that the AI tech choices are not yet predictable in the ancient age. Makes sense, since the additions of new wonders and other features make some of the less AI researched techs more valuable (read math, philosopy, poly). This is a good thing, and perhaps ups the challenge a bit (or the variety). I hope the proliferation of AA wonders and features (and early Middle Ages wonders and features) ends up being more of a balanced diet than too much candy. Not enough games to tell from this end.

Scenario Thoughts

I did play the mesoamerican scenario. AIs were more worker hungry (for obvious reasons, as slaves are the key to victory, IMO). Scenario is fun, but methinks too easy. 40cp for a worker sacrifice is too powerful--when you can win the game with a single city culture victory @ 2000cp. Deity vets will want to play no lower than deity, or aim for something other than one city culture.

Varient Thoughts

Always War--this one changes SIGNIFICANTLY with the nerfing of the military great leaders. I am seriously curious how this one will play--but I think the game needs some more exploration before we jump on it.

Want a Tip?

The Roman Empire, is Supperior. Commercial = More Money, and LESS Corruption.

Becuse I would ONLY be a Scientific Civ, if it was a RACE for The Wonders. If even then. That is why The Roman Empire, is Supperior!! Becuse all that Extra money, goes into The Science.. Not only that, but with Leigon, I get a Defence of 3, two Techs into the game,, and Leigons  , may I remind you, Remain up to date , until
The Industrial Age.

I have a Multiplayer game going right now, On 2 BIG Sepperate Continents, and I just triggered my Golden Age with Leigons, 3 Techs before Industrial Age. He got The Art of War, but I have, (Smith's Trading Company), J.S. Bachs Catheldral, Sistine Chapel, Pyrimids, Magellans Voyage, and Copernicus Observatory Located in Rome with Newtons University. Im doing OVER 200 Science in Rome at 50% He thinks he's gonna Win.
The Magellans Voyage is Not in Rome.

Best World wonder u need to get is the smiths trading company because at the end of the game u are making like1000-3000 gold a turn because you dont need to pay for any expenses.

Didn't get this one? Could you please explain?

He is talking about setting himself up to get republic for free if he can somehow manage to do that and be the first one to research philosophy. You get a free tech now if you are the first one in the world to research philosophy - just like it used to be in cvi 2. But I bet you already knew that.

Hey I did not know that. :)

Thanks.

This is nowhere mentioned in any of the manuals and readmes and docs of Conquests. I wonder what else is not mentioned.

One of the big thing I noticed in my first epic game that I started two days ago, was the effect of not being able to trade contacts until printing press. That really hosed my game. I always explore big time, and use my contact advantage to help me stay close in techs. Without being able to do that, I soon found myself far behind in techs. I'm kinda lost as to how to make up for the change, and my solution was pointy stick research. Which has worked ok, but I am now mired in wars that I cannot make any progress in. Granted, I'm almost a complete newb with the deep strategy part of this game. I always used to just play for the fun of it, without getting deep into strategies. Probably why I never really got passed reagent. But reading the posts here and following the SGs, I've actually won on Monarch (although it took me to space race to do it). I'm now trying to win "culturaly", and having a great time failing at it :crazyeye:

While contact trading has changed the nature of the game drastically, you must also realize that it works against the AI as much as you. So on a continents map it has actually become easier than PTW to dominate the tech race, while pangeae has become harder.

I'm now trying to win "culturaly", and having a great time failing at it

Winning culturally is more difficult than the other methods. If I were to rate the difficulty of the different methods of winning then I would say (from hardest to easiest)

Cultural victory
Space race victory
Conquest victory
Domination victory
Diplomatic victory

I would say try the other ones first before trying cultural.
