At first look this unit looked like a very lousy unit to get. (understatement)

-
Costly
lousy offence and defence
to late in the game to do normal scouting.
hard to get a Golden age by winning a battle.

+
Very good movement in enemy teritory
Usefull for pillaging.

I have found it usefull when you want to disable a opponents infrastructure. This could be used bouth as a first strike, and as a defensive strike when you get attacked.

How to use it.
Make 5- to 10 units and place them as border guards against your enemies. Mountains is good places for the view and the def. bonus. You can move 3-5 zones into your opponents teritory and still pillage that (rail)road/luxury/rescours.

Any other sugestions for usage? Should we avoid playing spain as this unit seem to be low strength compared to the opponents special units?

The spanish are commercial and religious, these are powerful traits by itself. Since they don't have an ancient UU, there probably won't be a too early golden age. As for conquistadores, please read this article: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=18252

There's no reason to avoid the Spanish, but there might be reasons to play another civ.

@Shabbaman: but the conquistador is a military unit and therefore can't do all the things an explorer can.

That's assuming that and explorer can stay in the AI's territory without a ROP (only getting a warning but never the order to remove the forces or declare war...).

Funny that the conquistador trigger so many questions. We had another thread just a couple of days ago about this.
