Not impressed, Firaxis. Been a fan of Civ since the first. One game on my must-buy list, now that I've got my spiffy new PC, was the latest version of one of my all-time favourites.
I can't play it.
Only thrice, in I don't know how many attempts, have I been able to play more than 10 turns at a time. The game hangs & (given modern rubbish programming) I can't even Window or Ctl-Alt-Del to get out. System reset every time. Pretty crap.
Dxdiag is attached. I don't believe there is anything exceptional about my set-up (i.e. it's all very mainstream manufacturers, no obscure cheap kit). Freezes more often than not seem to be triggered by audio events (yes my audio drivers are up to date), but not exclusively so. Whatever the problem is, I've never yet managed to get past about 500BC. I installed the game & patched it (1.52). I got so fed up with it this afternoon, I uninstalled it, re-installed it, & tried it unpatched. Nope, still freezes, though this did give me pass-turn-10-game-number-3.
The only saving grace here is that I bought the game from Amazon, so only spent £20 on it. OTOH, if I'd trotted down to my local store, I could take the bloody thing back for a refund!
Not happy. Not at all happy. Anyone got any suggestions? Otherwise this sits in the box till the next patch (when it probably still won't work). I would also add that the likes of X3, COD2, FarCry, Thief 3, & so on have not given me the slightest technical trouble, so I'm not inclined to believe it's a hardware based problem.
