Continents generating crap maps

Anyone have this issue where like, civ V made you love continents but now instead of like 2-4 large "island" masses, it's either two giant globs of crap or just weird things? I have to restart a bazillion times to find a decent map. There's a decent mod out there, small continents, but frustratingly I am stuck in the middle. Continents is just two giant globs, small continents looks kinda "fractal"-ish. Should I try plattes or something?
