A bit ironic that she was bound in Eleuthera (which means 'free', supposing it was named for the greek adjective)

Tragic, is the word I'd use.

The rest of that guy's portfolio -- what he's posted on his website, anyway -- is pretty impressive, though (I'm jealous!).

Why would you equate interest in science with autism?

I have a blanket with the periodic table on it (one of the things I bought with my Geek Points at the old ThinkGeek site).

Tragic, yes. That picture was posted on the CBC.ca site awhile ago, and it should have had a warning accompanying it, for people who find such images too disturbing.

I must have cried at least 15 minutes over that poor turtle (and I'm tearing up all over again). It got tangled in the fishing line, and the line was tangled on the coral. The turtle had no way to get to the surface, so it drowned.

    Probably my poor wording here.

My son has an official diagnosis of (mild) autism and as such, finds things that have an order, a structure, a right/wrong answer much easier to handle and understand than areas of 'greyness' such as emotions and feelings.
Obviously, every autistic person is different, that's just the way my son is.

I bought World Atlas when i was 7 (well, technically mom but I had choice between toy and book. Never regret that choice - still has that Atlas after 23 yrs next to me in sweet spot) Didn't turn into anything "professional" (my social skills are terrible) but got to world "Olympics" of geography when was 17 yrs old.

I've certainly heard that there's some kind of relationship between autism - particularly the mild autism that used to be called "Asperger Syndrome" - and mathematical ability. I can't remember if there have been studies done or it's just anecdotal. iirc, Asperger's is no longer a separate diagnosis, and has been folded into the autism spectrum.

Well, that's really coincidental, because I mentioned to a friend on Twitter earlier how much I'd love to go back to Meteora.

Romania keeps building massive structures; this new cathedral is next to the immense parliament house...

Anyway, here is an awesome drone video of all the six monasteries of the Meteora :wow:

I thought that women weren't allowed to visit them or am I just confused? Did you just mean the area, rather than the monasteries themselves?

That's Mt Athos, which is a community of more monasteries, in the Chalkidike peninsula.
    Meteora are in Thessaly.

Indeed. I assume then that that doesn't hold for other Orthodox monastic sites?

Correct. Only Mt Athos is autonomous. Partly because it was founded 1000 years ago.

The great fire of 1917 ruined so many things...
