We've all had our threads about what Civ's the best, what you're going to play first, etc. But there's one thing I haven't seen touched on. So, the question is: what Civ can boast the coolest-sounding name to its… um, name? Who's going to bring down the semantic shock and awe? Could be a leader name, a UU/UB, or an ability. Whatever floats your boat.

In CIV, it was the Vikings. You see a guy with chain mail, a horned helmet, and a 3-foot-long beard whose name is freakin' Ragnar Lodbrok and you've got nothing. Although Saladin's full name (Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn Yūsuf ibn Ayyūb) is just as epic. But it wasn't used in-game, so it doesn't count.

For CiV, my vote is Germany. You can't beat something as epic as Furor Teutonicus. And all associations aside, a name like "Otto von Bismarck" doesn't just demand your respect and attention, it grabs your attention by the throat and squeezes.

Wu Zetian would have to be my pick for a leader name that really does it for me. It might be because I have a thing for Asian civs, but who knows, I just really think the name looks nice and easy on the eyes. As far as a unit, Sipahi probably has it. Something about the way it looks when written as well makes me like it.

You do have a point with Ragnar, too. Everytime I play and he pops up to greet me into the world I have to just say, "Ha. Vikings. Awesome."

Montezuma of Aztec; a ripped guy in tribal garb, skulls lining the walls of his palace and standing behind a ceremonial fire.

Immortal. The Persians were on to something when they decided their elite were going to be known as "Immortals." Doesn't get much cooler than un-ending life! On a side-note, I'm glad they are (properly) a foot soldier now, and not mounted.

Good point; also the story behind the name is suitably epic.

As for the new version, weren't there both mounted Immortals and infantry Immortals?

The Chu-ko-Nu, because the unit image invokes something rather....disco to me.

Bushido and Landsknecht. They just sound tough.

I guess we haven't seen them yet in Civ5 but I love some of the evocative place names in 4 like Snaketown and Lalibela and Yasodharapura.

The Great Warpath

Oh come on. Iroquois win!

HAIO FRICKING WATHA
MOHAWK FRICKIN WARRIOR
Longhouse (not so awesome)
THE GREAT FRICKIN WARPATH

The FRICKIN-scale tells me the Iroquois are off the FRICKIN charts!

umm GDR anyone. That is the coolest sounding unit name by far. Or dorkiest- depending on how you look at it.
