copper/iron mines

new to civ4

i have within city limits a copper deposit
i have the worker build a mine on the copper tile
when finished, i do not have copper available

when i place the cursor over the copper mine, it says ...
"copper, requires route mine"

what does this mean?
and how do i get this copper resource?

Build a road from your mine to your city.

Edit: For future reference, I believe all resources (except sea-based ones, like clam, fish, or whale) require roads that connect the resource to a city.

sea-based resources still require a route, it's just that the ocean tile itself provides the route. Land-based resources don't need roads either, as long as there is a nearby river to transport the resources on. Aside from that, you will need a road or railroad to connect land-based resources.
