copying/pasting from gamefonts.tga

I can't seem to be able to successfully cut and paste an icon from one mods gamefonts.tga file to another. I'm getting really frustrated and have used both paintshop pro and GIMP to try to do it... I know it probably has something to do with alpha channels but haven't a clue... could someone walk me through, step by step, a simple cut and paste operation from one tga file to another? Pretend I'm a monkey that doesn't know anything about graphics .
