Xylitol
Calcium Stearate
Ethyl Lactate
Maltodextrin
Saccharin
Polydextrose
Ethylene
Xanthan Gum
Sucrose
Sorbital
White Vinegar
Gluten
Ethel Acetate
Fibersol-2
High Fructose Corn Syrup
Fumaric Acid

Citric Acid
Ascorbic Acid
Baking Powder
Vanilla extract
the list goes on seemingly forever :eww:

also it is prominent in
Beef
Chicken
Pork
Fish (WTFH????)

I think I'm going insane
what do you think?

Corn is a feedstock for large parts of the food industry, and parts of the chemical industry. And a lot of what we eat is both food and chemical :p Also food and dairy animals largely have a corn diet.

Neat-o.

But, ~80% of our corn crop goes to meat/animal production, so I think that list is misleading. While I don't know how some of those depend on corn, it'd be a misrepresentation to put

*warning stipulated data on peanut butter coming*

peanut butter, which let's say uses .5% of the corn crop (lol how could it even use that much) in the same category as the animal industry, which takes 80%.

Good for Illinois, Good for Godwynn.

How the hell is all that dependent on corn? :dubious:
the average supermarket has ~45,000 products and about ~90% is corn based
my calculator tells me that is ~40,500 corn based products :crazyeye:

High Fructose Corn Syrup is a killer. Avoid it at all costs.

Not any more than any other sugar.

Cane sugar does taste better though.

With regards to the OP:

Those are organic compounds. No points for guessing what kind of compound HFCS is. It's all part of the synthesis pathway.

An article that does deal with some of the reasons for the increased use of corn and corn products in food is available here:

http://www.michaelpollan.com/article.php?id=52

It draws some interesting links and conclusions, not the least of which is the political decision making which has a flow on effect to other parts of the food industry - the feedlot system, for example. Whilst the introduction of mass feedlots predated the cheap abundance of corn from the 1970s (and in the case of the poultry industry, was invented across the Atlantic), it can be argued that the two have subsequently influenced one another, with the flow on effects of pharmaceutical consumption by cattle and changing standards of beef quality.

But corn is so tasty! Especially slathered with butter and roasted over a fire then slathered some more! YUMYUM!

Of course you don't eat that everyday. Duh. :p

Indeed. The problem with HFCS isn't the substance itself, but the effects cheap sweeteners have had on people's health. Honey is basically naturally occurring HFCS and I doubt anyone has a problem with that (vegans aside).

25% of everything in your local supermarket is derrived from corn. That includes the non-edible items, like walls and boxes.

You forgot Monosodium Glutimate(MSG) and Natural Flavors(like Natural Strawberry Flavor)
also it is prominent in
Beef
Chicken
Pork
Fish (WTFH????)

It's find for chicken and pork. Those animals grew up eating corn, and are used to it. Corn-fed beef and fish, however, are ecological disasters, ruining the environment and the animal(corn-fed beef is horribly unhealthy compared to grass-fed)

I use margarine, with its partially hydrogenated corn oil!
I hope you're joking ElMac. If you really plan to live for even 1/10th of forever you better quit that ASAP. ;)

And yeah, corn is in lots of stuff. So is dairy, wheat, sugar, all sorts of crap. The best way to avoid stuff you don't want in stuff is to minimize your consumption of non-whole-foods.
