(TL:DR version, wife and I tested negative for covid yesterday)

So... a personal update, a few days ago both I and my wife had a fever, sore throat, and coughing. I called my doctor's office around lunchtime explaining that while I ordinarily wouldn't go to a doctor about these symptoms, I was thinking a covid test would be worthwhile. I got a "telehealth appointment" (aka the doctor calling me) for 6:30PM, she had a few questions for me and scheduled me, and my wife, for a covid-19 test near her office the next day at 2PM. It was a drive-through one, and after being in an auto line for about 20min we got the express test that was a swab around the inside of the nostrils but did not go up into the brain like the non-express (but slightly more accurate) version. An hour later our results (negative) were texted to us, they explained that were the results positive they'd have called and scheduled us for a non-express confirmation test.

I had to read this twice to make sense of it. There was nothing wrong with how you wrote it, just my brain doesn’t fully function at 8:30 in the morning here.

Good news that the tests were negative. I hope you feel better soon!

Thanks. And I prepended a TLDR with an edit so hopefully anyone else with intermittent comprehension challenges won't have to reread. :)

Argentina manages to finally overtake Italy in terms of deaths per million.
Argentina's health minister promises that there will be 13 million vaccinations by the end of the year. He also admits that Argentina's statistics are not reliable but then shifts the blame onto the various provincial administrations.

100 cases in Osaka today for the first time in about 6 weeks.

The number of people not wearing masks in public is increasing. Still low relative to countries with a lot of crazy anti-mask people, but much higher than I’m comfortable with.

    Idiots! Get it together!

We arrived at over 6k infections in a single day now. and have passed all our neighbours. Switzerland #1. Positivity rate of 26%

Meanwhile government decides to wait until at least next wednesday.

What’s happening in Europe that’s caused all this? I just saw a graph of infections in Switzerland and it looks like it came out of nowhere.

    It came from the desert.
&Swiss are mostly german, so probably were lulled by the false german stats.

Besides, they are surrounded by heavily hit countries - including said cooked stats Germany

@Kyriakos, I guess what mystifies me on this side of the earth is how it can balloon so suddenly in a country like Switzerland, but here the growth hasn’t (yet) been explosive.

I’m worried about next weekend too where I’m sure there will be gaggles of braying Halloween morons. Good thing I have absolutely no reason to travel to that part of the city.

Japan's been kind of an outlier from the start. e.g. from July, and the situation hasn't really changed since then: Coronavirus: Japan's mysteriously low virus death rate

It may look like it came out of nowhere but it didn't: Since july we had steadily but slowly growing numbers...then in late september it accellerated a lot. Most experts, including the science task force that was created to advise the government warned of this outcome several weeks ago. Due to federalism, the national governement did nothing and referred to the cantonal governments who then in turn did nothing. As a result precious weeks were wasted with no action at all. Even now, they decided to wait some more. Zürich today decided to keep allowing events with > 1000 attending.

Purely economic reasons is my guess. The official line is because they have a good "Schutzkonzept" (protection concept), which is a joke.
