Greetings, First time poster, long time lurker.

I apologize if any of these ideas have been proposed so far, but after trying a few games with corporations there are a few things that I think could make them more in depth and allow for some non-military damage to competing civs as well as things to compete against.

What about a few more corporations that don't exchange benefits for gold? Say like
-a fast-food corporation that exchanges happiness for health,
-an oil corporation that increases gold +1 in each town worked for a pollution cost of -1/2 health per town worked.
-a televangelist type of corporation that could be built by a late game great profit that would cause a penalty in science and gold for a huge happiness bonus and a decrease to war weariness.
-a Wal-mart type of corporation where the corporate headquarters increases its income as the total number of cities with the corporation grows (so one city +4, two yields +5/city, three gives +6 etc..) but each city that has the corporation receives no benefits and also incurs a penalty to production as well as the maintenance penalty.

Since the numbers of great people are few and far between later in the game, treat these corporations that don't cause a maintenance penalty as national or cheap world wonders so that additional corporations could simply be built.

Also, what about a 'resource acquisition corporate executive' that would work differently than a regular corporate executive. Rather than setting up a corporate branch that 'sells' a product it would set up a situation where the host city would exploit a cities population and resources. The host city would receive a financial benefit + 'X' gold/turn and no maintenance penalty but one citizen would be forced into the specialized citizen spot that could not be changed into any . The civ with that corporation would still get the cash in the headquarters and would gain access to what ever resource that corporation requires. They could be expelled at a high cost and a relationship penalty, and possibly compete with all corporate branches so that they could only be removed by the 'sales' end of a corporation.

A spy function 'corporate espionage' could also be added giving +XXXX beakers to a technology. A nice middle option that could be cheaper than stealing a technology completely. Also a reduction in EP costs in a city if you have a corporation in it that is increased by the number of corporations you have in it, but the foreign civ who is hosting your corporations could conduct copropate espionage in those cities.
